You know you are sfger when you see a pile of grass that was dropped out of a truck in the middle of the road and think.. oooooooooo do I want that for the compost pile !! Quickly shakes head and drives on with the family knowing they would say omg Mom are you kidding me lololololololololololol

Think about buying a second compost bin so you can have TWO piles cooking...even after you realize that last year you never would have thought you'd be so excited about having two huge mounds of rotting leaves out by the fence.

If you bought another Jiffy seed starting kit. Filled with water to plump the peat discs. Put beside kitchen sink. Left to run errands and Daughter (21) thought at first mom had made cookies.

Re: You Know You're a Square Foot Gardener When...
you have a large variety of plants in all your windows patiently waiting their turn in the SFG, even some almost full grown and with flowers.
You compare your veggies to the ones in the store and say mine look better than that :-)
Your garden is the first thing on your mind after work.
You worry about the little transplant when the weather is bad.

Your husband comes home with a pack of Gatorade in 20-oz bottles so he can make homemade Aqua Globes -- thus your SF beds now resemble a lushly overgrown recycling center.

You might be a Square Foot Gardener if...Your wife comes home from her bicycle ride all excited about finding a board on the side of the road and says, "Quick, get the truck and lets go get it before someone else finds it, we can use it for one side of a new garden".

.....if you have a square that says SFG on your highway traveling bingo card.
For those that don't know what a highway traveling bingo card is, It's a bingo card to keep the children busy playing a game to keep from asking "Are we there yet" while you are traveling.

You know you're either an SFGer (or you've completely lost your marbles) when you have the chance to spend the day all by yourself shopping in Paris...and you're thinking about staying home to work in the garden.
(My best gal pal is pretty convinced I've lost my marbles...!!!)

Paris Schmaris - it ain't no SFG. Besides, that is what winter is for - shopping in Paris.

I can relate. My store put the quart size containers of indeterminate tomatoes on sale for $0.62 each because they were becoming root bound. With my discount they were $0.56 each.. Guess how many I bought and how many empty squares I had..... now where are we going to plant them .

Re: You Know You're a Square Foot Gardener When...
... if you walk past the home organization aisle in any store and eye up the different containers, evaluating their sizes (does this tote look like it's about a square foot?) and whether or not they'd work as planters in the garden because you are looking for a cheap way to add more space for plants in the garden, but don't want to out-right build another box.

...If you get out of bed 10 minutes earlier than you did before you had SFG's just so you can check on the 'babies' before going to work.

...if after reading this site for only 2 days - decide that the 128 squares in my garden are no where near big enough for my hubby & I, and I'm going to have to go looking for building materials this weekend!!!
Hubby's going to think I'm crazy.

You Know You're a Square Foot Gardener When...
...You take a half day off work on a Thursday because the weekend is supposed to be lousy and if you don't get your hands in some dirt you are going to lose it...
...Your child's crib gets recalled and you think "I wonder if I could use the pieces as trellis material"...
...You have actually gone "dumpster diving" for materials for your garden boxes...
...You actually do get excited about free goat, cow, horse, chicken..(fill in your favorite herbivore) poo..
...You see a strange new vegetable in the supermarket/farmer's market and the first thing you think is "I wonder how many of those grow in a square foot" not "I wonder what that tastes like"...

Guiltly of all but the first one, I'm a stay at home mom and we homeschool, so we just do P.E., Science, Health, Math and what ever I can squeeze in out in the garden..........
As for dumpter diving, I went to the Salvage Yard and almost did not get to go back a second time......

That's great, lol.
...When after you've planted everything you can, and you stand back and look at your work you think "I bet I could grow (number) more (veggie) if I reconfigured things a bit more..." Then from that point on you have your seed catalogs back out, and you're already scouring the internet and stores for things your going to buy for next year, but you then instead buy them now because they're on sale and instead of waiting til next year you figure out a new way to use them now instead of later because "You can never have to much stuff to grow." But you still don't stop the scouring and whatnot because now you still have look for that stuff that you said would be next years purchase.
Re: You Know You're a Square Foot Gardener When...
Great idea!
...when you check plants you know aren't growing quickly about 10 times a day.
...when you by a max/min thermometer solely for your garden.
...when your neighbors ask what it is and you don't let them leave even when you know they only wanted a short answer....making them regret they ever asked.
...when your kids can identify weeds and specific veggies better than any other adult you know (possibly even your head-shaking wife/husband).
...when you had more squares than you thought you could possibly plant a month ago and now are trying to convince the spouse that you need to add another 4x12 bed.
LOL....when you know unequivocally what vermiculite is, and it just rolls off your fingers when you type.
edit: (The comment underneath me, FarmerVal, is hysterical!)

...when you ask a Home Depot guy where the "compressed" bales of peat moss are and explain to him that $9 for a 2 cu ft UNcompressed bale is a ripoff. (just did that one this morning.)
