N & C Midwest: Nov. Dec. 2024
Happy November everyone! Winding down the year here, and don’t forget to Fall Back this weekend! Seems like I need that extra hour of sleep in the mornings, with it being so dark and all. Had some rain and lots of wind here in the last couple days. Not really a dent in the drought though.
Only thing I still have left growing out there is some Swiss Chard and leftover carrots. What’s going on with you all?

All but one of my beds have been cleaned off, refreshed with compost, and mulched for the winter. The one that isn't done yet still has lettuce, green onions, and carrots in it. It got down to 25ºF last night, so the lettuce is probably done, but I haven't gone out to look at it yet. I'll probably pull the carrots in the next couple weeks, and then mulch the green onions to keep them until spring. The only gardening now will be in the greenhouse, where there are lettuce, spinach, cucumbers, kohlrabi, and Bok Choy currently growing.

Cleaned out a couple beds, made room and planted garlic in my new 2x7 where I had squash and cucumbers. Still have room to have the melons up the trellis there.
Beautiful day!

A few days ago the farmer across the road decided to combine the corn during a 30 - 50 mph wind storm, and we ended up with a yard full of corn leaves and husks. Today we raked the yard to put it in the compost bin. When we got done, I had a 4'x4'x4' compost bin about half full of packed down Maple and Poplar leaves, and corn leaves and husks, which I layered with Starbucks coffee grounds. Should have some nice leaf mold in about a year.

It got cold here today! Started out moderate temps, but dropping now and going to get cold before it moderates back to normal temps.
I ate a carrot out of my bed (it is a container) of Tendersweets, very yummy. Started to rain, but will get them in this weekend. Everything else but the garlic is done!

You're right, we are going to see the first winter blast the next couple days. Low of 30ºF tonight, with a high of 35ºF tomorrow. They are forecasting 2" to 3" of snow, too! Brrrrrrrrr!!!!!
Just came in from picking lettuce, spinach, and cucumbers in the greenhouse, and the weather was beautiful in there. 40ºF outside, but 76ºF in the greenhouse.

Got all remaining Swiss Chard off, and harvested the carrots. Also, was able to get the rest of the tomato cages out of there, eggplant remnants, and put all things away with help from my baby daughter.
I guess we are prepared for winter, some of the garlic had come up. Squirrel activity was evident out there…we will see!
Bring it!

I think the time has come for me to pull the rest of the carrots and green onions. The lettuce froze and is done. After the rest of the carrots and onions are pulled the bed can be prepared for the long winter ahead.

Re: N & C Midwest: Nov. Dec. 2024
This morning someone lost a bag of horse bedding off of their truck, and it broke open before it rolled into my yard. It was a 5.5 cu ft bag of organic fine pine shavings. I was able to rescue the remnants of it, probably a little over 3 cu ft was still in the bag. It was perfect timing since we are forecast to have nighttime lows into the low teens for the next several nights. I still had some of the Kyoto Red winter carrots and some green onions to pull. I pulled all of the carrots and onions, and then used the free pine shavings to mulch the last bed for winter. All of the beds are ready for the long winter now.
