You might be a SFG'er if you . . . .
go out your front door to get the mail and on your way back in, stop and prepare a 2x4 bed for planting.

are carrying groceries into the house and stop on the way back to the car at the garden (that is just outside the side door!) and do a quick weeding of the garlic bed before bringing in another armload of groceries.

You might be a SFG'er if you . . . .
...scold the kids for throwing away an apple core, banana peel or potato skins.
...if you dream all night about making garden boxes.
...see things at the side of the road, that someone threw away, and say "Hey I could use that for (input SFG item here)".
Just a few I've experienced so far. LOL

You might be a SFG'er if you . .
...determine how every single great deal at a garage sale or auction could possibly be used to make a tabletop SFG...

. . . you bake cookies to give to the guys next door hoping they will let you have the lumber from the old deck they are ripping out. . . which you later carefully remove all the nails from and before lovingly stacking it for later use, wondering if you should sand the finish off (just to save a few bucks)

Re: You Know You're a Square Foot Gardener When...
have your son ask, "isn't there ANYTHING we could do in the garden now?", after spending 5 minutes dumping a scoop of compost on every unused square, 'just because' and to CREATE work in the garden (gave us something to mix around in the squares)!

you realize that after 15 minutes, you're done with all spring related tasks in your garden large enough for a family of 5!

...clean up and store your shovel and rake for the winter, and forget to take them out for a couple years...
You might be..
You might be a Square Foot Gardener if you are assigned the "welcome to our store" duties you stand there with the ALL NEW book in your hand and say, "WOW, have you seen this!"

instead of reading a book in bed, you have a couple of pencils and grids representing your existing beds, and you stay up wayyyyyyy too late because it's so much fun.
(And so much more work than anything during the growing season!)

... get upset & slam on rubber gloves to go thru the recycling bin or garbage can because OTHERS may have thrown away precious sfg, compost or gardening materials
... drive hubby crazy as you think twice, three or four times about possible re-use of remnants of every home improvement project
... begin to worry about yourself as container hoarding becomes a way of life
(but I'm having fun !!)

Re: You Know You're a Square Foot Gardener When...
see a 'different' bagged compost than you already have in your stash of composts for bed expansion and get so excited, you and the kids do a little dance in the store. (Just happened, *grin* we were at TSC and saw they got in a shipment of 'garden compost' (we don't have enough of our own for bed expansions).

Re: You Know You're a Square Foot Gardener When...
you've been planning your 2010 garden October of 2009.
You find yourself scoping out the neighborhood on trash day looking for wood, containers, etc...
my blog starts back up
i get to go from being a hooker (i crochet) to a hoe (hee hee gardening)
my daugther is getting used to seeing "mamas papers" aka grids
Im getting packages daily... SEEDS!

And that's why we missed you this winter!
Re: You Know You're a Square Foot Gardener When...
Yeah, I tend to knit and crochet in the winter time, and as soon as say Jan hits, I transition. Time to get out the sexy nylons.... for my MELONS of course... I mean, well YOU get it!!!
Re: You Know You're a Square Foot Gardener When...
happyfrog - closely related - see a new type of bagged compost and exclaim "oh!" so excitedly that your husband thinks you saw a beautiful new flower.

....you still fork out 50 cents for that liberal rag of a newspaper to make paper pots to start seeds in (and divide the rest between the puppy and the parrot)

When my wife called to cancel delivery of the TNT, she was asked why. She told them the truth: the PI fits the puppy pens better!
Re: You Know You're a Square Foot Gardener When...
you borrow a cement mixer to make your Mels' mix...
Re: You Know You're a Square Foot Gardener When...
ooh - GREAT idea!!! is the cement mixer typically cleaned between uses so it's not all contaminated with 'stuff'? what a brilliant brilliant idea! wonder if that's an option aroudn here - a cement mixer rental ? that would make such quick work!

What a fantastic idea! I wonder if I can get Ray's back from my dad (I wonder what we took in exchange?)
