N & C Midwest: September 2024
Finally feels a little like fall today here, I opened the windows this morning for a bit! Zero rain here still, on a positive note, my yard isn’t growing! But neither is anything else.
Not much planned outside today, will probably water if nothing else. It looks like the potatoes are ready to dig soon. They are in the cold frame, so ready to get that cleared out and amended for fall.
What are you up to!?

This week was rough with the heat, humidity and lots of watering. It is finally cooler today.
Going to spend some time weeding and just tinkering around.
Dragon beans are coming in strong now as well as peppers. Planted some beets in my cold frame a bit ago. I love having a way to keep a little bit of the garden going just a little longer.

Yes, agree! I am sick of the multiple hot days and humidity with no rain! I love my cold frame!JAM23 wrote:This week was rough with the heat, humidity and lots of watering. It is finally cooler today.

Feels more like fall now - transplanted lettuce and other seedlings. The birds ate my chard seedlings so they must be tasty to them.
I've made both greek salad and caprese salad with the cherry tomatoes from mypatio.
Planning more changes in plantings for next year. I have a hummingbird that visits daily so will make sure to have some flowers

Removed the rest of the summer squash plant to the compost bin, spread 50# of coffee grounds over the bed, and then added a 3" layer of compost to bring the bin back up to level. That bed is ready for winter since nothing else will be planted this year, unless I decide to plant some Crimson Clover for a cover crop.
Proof that fall is quickly approaching is here since the Autumn Clematis is now in bloom.

I think I have some of this growing in my front perennial garden, but I didn’t plant it! I thought it was a honeysuckle of some type…hmm!

If if just appeared on its own, it is probably a Japanese Honeysuckle -- we are digging those out all of the time after the birds spread the seeds. But check the leaves to be sure. The Autumn Clematis is a climber, and it it does not have a post or fence to climb on it will just lay on the ground.

This is the first time I’ve seen the plant. I will check the leaves! I had planned to dig all the unwanted vines out!

I still have my houseplants on the porch—will probably bring them in this weekend. The weather has been very unpredictable.

Harvested the sweet potatoes from the mineral lick tubs today. Got about a bushel of potatoes from the two tubs, and learned that in the future I can't use the white tub for growing potatoes. Good harvest, though.
This is the harvest from the black tub. Some really big potatoes in there, too.
This is the harvest from the white tub, about 2/3rds as many as from the black tub.
The potatoes are curing in the greenhouse for the next couple weeks.

Picked a lot of my peppers yesterday, and have some tomatoes too. Plan is to can this weekend. Squash is about done. It is turning crunchy now. Eggplants are still going. So are carrots and Swiss chard.

The Blue Lake Pole Beans on the arbor were done, and the leaves were yellowing. Cut all of them off at the soil level, pulled the vines off of the arbor, chopped them up, and placed them in the compost bin. The tomato plants are starting to whither, but fruit are still ripening, so the plants will be left in place for a while. We are about 2 or 3 weeks away from the first heavy frost, when we'll be harvesting the Butternut squash.

First official day of fall, and here it is still hot and dry. We are supposed to get some relief this week from the heat. Not sure about rain. I have not harvested anything, it plan to cook my last 2 patty pans into a squash casserole. Might take a walk out there to see. Officially over it!

Finally got a much needed 1" of rain last night! Not enough to break the severe drought we are in, but it is a good start. Forecast is calling for more rain over the next few days, too.

Yes, we did finally get rain. Not in time for the farmers. Pulled a tomato and some eggplants.
Made the squash casserole, yummy!

Re: N & C Midwest: September 2024
Got beat up with the tail end of tropical storm Helene yesterday. Got a little over 2" of rain, with 60mph winds. Had over 7 hours of power outage. Most of the gardens came through in pretty good shape. The leaf lettuce has been pretty much destroyed, and most of the leaves were torn/twisted off of the rhubarb plants. Some of the pepper plants broke off, but some of them survived. Overall, we are doing well after the storm blew through.

I didn't realize it reached up into your area. All of the news seems to be Florida to Tennessee and the lower coastal states.

A neighbor about 2 miles down the road from us lost their greenhouse to the storm. They did not have it anchored to the ground, and the wind flipped it over and destroyed it as it blew it across the fields.
Fortunately, I had anchors installed on mine, and they are rated for winds up to 70mph. It didn't suffer any damage from this storm. I had just taken the shade cloth off of the greenhouse a few days before the storm.

Re: N & C Midwest: September 2024
I was able to get out for a short while between rain storms this afternoon to clean up some of the garden, and harvested a few things. One of the largest eggplants split in half with the high winds, and I had to harvest a couple of the fruit even though they weren't fully mature yet. Need to start getting the beds ready for winter - shut down the drip irrigation, refresh the compost, and heavily mulch them to protect from winter storms.
