Confirm what this is
Recently I bought a bag of Brussel sprouts. Trimmed the stems a bit. Placed them in boiling water, and soon noticed a few hard white "balls" float to the top of the water. Was not sure what this was, but when I removed some from the water to examine, they remained hard white balls. After the sprouts cooked, I examined a few; I pulled off the largest, outside leaves and attached to the stem were more of these white balls, going around the stem. I have never seen these before, and I have eaten them for decades, so I am wanting some confirmation as to what they are. I am guessing they are the start of new leaves. Has anyone else ever seen this?

Do you have pictures of it that you can post? Also, did you Google your question to see if there are articles on them, with pictures, available online?
