Fencing and coffee grounds.  The fences keep the deer at bay, mostly because they can't jump over one fence without getting trapped against the other fence. Unfortunately, the raccoons will climb over a fence or dig under it. But, I have found they absolutely hate coffee grounds. So, I am constantly spreading coffee grounds on all gardens, both in-ground and raised beds. Raccoons soon decide to avoid the area since it always has the smell of the coffee grounds.

The biggest pest we have for corn is the earworm, which totally destroys an ear of corn, and since we are in the midwestern corn belt there is no shortage of the moth laying those eggs. Fortunately, they are fairly easy to control in a home garden by simply put drops of Bt on the silks as they start to dry. Fortunately we also have tree swallows and purple martins that love to the the moths....   Very Happy

OG, You have double fencing? I have read that double fencing is good against deer.

In the garden area.  We have a large fenced in back yard that was for the dogs (we no longer have dogs), and then a small fence inside the yard fence around the garden beds. If a deer jumped the yard fence, they would be between the yard fence and the garden fence without enough room to get up the speed to jump either fence. That happened one time, and I had to open the yard fence gate to let the deer out - they never tried again after that.

That's what I thought the first year I grew them! They don't have the earthy taste of regular red beets, do they? hungry
