Re: How's the Weather Where You're At?
Suz, a little early in the year to begin calling out Mother Nature. Maybe because of the low expectations I try to keep thus protecting myself from getting disappointed but if she is listening, she has always treated me better than expected but then again I am always awed by every seed that sprouts but rarely take responsibility for those that don't. Happy New Year, Everybody. Best not to wait until the last minute and miss the party.

CN, Australia has a considerable and lengthy history of brush fires and heatwaves.
Re: How's the Weather Where You're At?
Maybe I'm just more sensitive, after surviving our drought, heat and brush fires, but what I've read in the past week about Australia, the mad dash to the beach by thousands to escape the fires, and the horrible stats about koala bear losses, it just broke my heart.donnainzone5 wrote:CN, Australia has a considerable and lengthy history of brush fires and heatwaves.
Their history does explain why so few homes have been destroyed, and there's been so little loss of life. I guess they've learned to cope, but it's still sad.
Re: How's the Weather Where You're At?
And getting worse. How will they ever recover? The Irwins have already rescued over 90,000 animals from these fires.donnainzone5 wrote:CN,

Absolutely beautiful January day! Sunny and bright, mid-40's, and no snow or rain! Checked on the raised beds cover crops, and turned the composters. Received 3 more seed catalogs in yesterday's mail, and still checking them out.....

Re: How's the Weather Where You're At?
According to Accuweather, we should be getting a fair amount of snow in the next week or so, and some very cold temps early next week.
That all remains to be seen, of course!

Well, today I picked up 200# of coffee grounds from the Starbucks stores, and spread them on the flower beds to start breaking down. Then, I emptied one of the compost tumbler sections and spread it on the only open (no cover crop) raised bed. Tomorrow, I'm going to take advantage of the 60-degree weather to empty the finished Bokashi bucket into the now-empty compost tumbler section, and add the 5 gallon bucket of juice pulp I picked up from the juice bar with a lot of pine pellets. Then Friday...well, I'll have to think of something that I can do outdoors....

Cold here, then rain. Nothing going on outside in my neck of the woods.

Re: How's the Weather Where You're At?
Another beautiful 60-degree January day! Spent a couple hours outdoors tidying up some flower gardens and tending to the compost tumblers. The compost has been really active with this warm weather. Supposed to rain tonight and tomorrow, but to stay warm through mid-next week before "seasonal" temperatures return.

Re: How's the Weather Where You're At?
Record warm temp today at 68ºF, with a little rain. Had a wind storm that passed through, but it didn't last long and didn't do any damage, so all is well on the homestead...
Don't remember us ever having such warm weather in January as we have had this week, but not complaining. If it stays this way until March, and then warms up, that will be fine with me.

Re: How's the Weather Where You're At?
That storm that caused so much damage in the mid-west came through here last night. Could hear it from 20 miles away... (Figured it out later based on storm speed.) Sounded like a low rumbling train. Haven't gone out yet to see if we have any damage. Friends had power go out apparently. But we were fine.

Re: How's the Weather Where You're At?
The small town about 13 miles NW of us had a small tornado last night, but all we had was a brief rain storm with high winds. I checked the estate after daylight this morning, and fortunately didn't see any damage here. Yesterday was 68ºF, today is 36ºF - quite a change!

Re: How's the Weather Where You're At?
Nothing to report here -- just cold and wet as far as the eye can see.
Re: How's the Weather Where You're At?
High today will be 69*F. That line of storms/Tornados went thru last night but have sunny skies right now.

The weather has been so mild that the Daffodils are up for the first time this spring. They are about 2" out of the ground already.

Re: How's the Weather Where You're At?
Here in the UK it's mild wet , wet & wetter , it's that wet the grass has taken to using scuba gear to survive . It's supposed to be the wettest year on record.
The last year we have only cut our lawns five times . Usually from April to October its been cut two or three times a week.
Today has been a belter .. heavy rain coming in sideways from the south east for much of the afternoon. Where we were it was high on some hills a couple of miles inland from the Bristol channel/ Irish sea with screaming winds coming in from the direction of Cuba , this coupled with a thick fog in some of the higher places .. crazy driving for a couple of hours but good fun … quite a few minor roads with 60 foot long 12 " deep puddles across them greeted us on the way to our destination . As we decided to comeback home via a visit to a large pet shop in Carmarthen we were able to pick up a dual carriageway & slow to 45 … 50 mph on a straight road as the rain & wind was still causing problems .
Weather I love it , especially if I'd wearing decent rain gear & wellies.
I think if the forecast is correct the weather will be heading for a bit of winter weather this weekend, with a widespread hard frost all over the UK for Saturday & Sunday , which should be cold enough to kill off a lot of garden pests . Perhaps our winter has finally arrived .

Re: How's the Weather Where You're At?
Too cold to do anything outside today, but they did lift about half of the rain they had forecast for the next 10 days. Tomorrow thru Monday it should also warm up a little, so I can work on my biochar project, then.
