How's the Weather Where You're At?
Lows in the 30s all the way through the 24th of March. My seedlings are almost a foot tall and really want to go oustide to play.
Re: How's the Weather Where You're At?
FGD, good.
CN, my seedlings are only 1' tall!
Camp, I remember your Brussel's sprouts. I can't imagine the cold in the NE! I mis-saved your cartoon of starting to garden in the snow.

Re: How's the Weather Where You're At?
The local paper says we have had this winter, so far, the most snow since they started recording it in 1892. 115.5" at the Ag station on campus, the oldest building there. It rained and snowed the last couple of days and is supposed to do some more this weekend. I have one last ewe to lamb, she is probably waiting for the storm tomorrow.
I have not been able to get into the greenhouse. The 5 gal bucket I put rocks in and set in front of the door to keep it from blowing open, that bucket is sitting in a block of ice several inches deep. When I tried to loosen it, the bucket started to break apart. I need to go get a heavy spade (there is one stored in the greenhouse for the winter ) to chip the ice. Soon.
I hope the folks in the NE are digging out ok and there is a let up on storms for awhile.
This winter seems to just not let up. Anyone read 'THe Long Winter' as a kid? North of us on the Blackfeet reservation the drifts covered houses and blocked the trains and highways from getting food and aid in.

Re: How's the Weather Where You're At?
I never read the Little House series, only the watched the TV show. I can NOT imagine living in the northern states in the winter. I am so spoiled by having to drive an hour up into the mountains to see snow. You are a better woman than I.
I have an old photo somewhere of a "great" aunt and uncle in front of their Nebraska sod cabin. Family lore is that she went crazy and had to move back East. I would go crazy with half-washed diapers drying in the cabin, a freezing walk to the out house or worse, using a communal chamber pot. Cooking the same mush every day. Confined to a small space with a silent man who was bored out of his gourd, sick kids. Nope, I don't blame her. The rattlesnakes were the final straw.

Re: How's the Weather Where You're At?
Dark and stormy today. Good for napping, catching up on the Forum, and juicing 3 buckets of the last of the oranges.
Re: How's the Weather Where You're At?
32 degrees this morning. Lows in the 30s for another week. Inside plants getting huge. Grrrrrr!
Re: How's the Weather Where You're At?
29 and sunny today.
Lost power for only 2 days this last storm, as opposed to the 3 day outage during the 1st one in March, but on final count: 3 tree damaged SFG boxes.

10 day forecast looks good. The high's range from 58-74*F. The lows range from 35-57*F. Almost ready to plant out tomatoes. Beginning next Sat all the low's are higher than 50*F. I have decided not to try season extending this year so I will wait until about next Sat.

Re: How's the Weather Where You're At?
Rained off and on today- have a total of 1.8 inches this week, and it's getting colder- weekend is in the freezing range at night. It's pretty frustrating for me, because I tried to get a jump on Spring planting this year, and start seeds indoors, but the frost cycle is real wacky here and I cannot get my plants outside to harden off, so they are getting pretty "leggy" waiting to be set out in their beds. I've already lost the cucumber seedlings to damping off and I hope that I have that problem contained. Oh well...

Re: How's the Weather Where You're At?
Same here and there was an article in the paper this morning about the professional farmers having the same problems. The ground is so soggy they can't get the equipment into the fields to harvest the asparagus. They're having to haul them out by hand. They can't do their transplanting either because of the cold nights. Re: How's the Weather Where You're At?
I watched the local news where a man was standing in his field of beans that had their first or second set of true leaves. He was worried about how the rain was going to affect the $10,000 invested in the crop. I'm sitting inside wondering why he didn't know heavy rain was expected. Well, I'm sure there is more to commercial farming of which I am not aware.
My seedlings got some sun today, then it turned into cold rain and they all had to be trotted back inside under the lights. The 10 day forecast is 60s and 70s.

Yup. Perfect timing. I've been working the Expo for weeks, while the weather was awful. Today is the last day, and now, starting tomorrow, the weather forecast is perfect for gardening and I am free of all other obligations. YEE-HAH! LIFE IS GOOD!sanderson wrote: The 10 day forecast is 60s and 70s.
Re: How's the Weather Where You're At?
Just started to look a bit like Spring here in Ottawa and now we have a special weather statement from Environment Canada. We are headed back to Winter like conditions with rain, freezing rain, snow, high winds and freezing cold temperatures. Blame it all on a Colorado low.

Past 3 days couple inches of snow, next 2 days rain, currently still raining and total swampy conditions. Hope my chickens can swim. Then then could swim over to the lettuce box for a feast of sprouts that reseeded from last year.

Re: How's the Weather Where You're At?
The weather is crazy! Friday it was 57 when I got to work at 250pm. Sunny and windy. Got off at 605pm and it was 37 degrees, cloudy, and the wind was howling. By the time I got home 12 miles away it was 34. We got down to 27 last night. There were a few snow flurries that had a light dusting on the deck by 10pm.
Today the wind was still blowing but the sun was out trying to warm us up. I think it got to the low 50 degree range this afternoon.
In my little greenhouse it was almost 70 degrees.
This coming week is to be much more pleasant with more seasonal temp. Oh, and the sun is supposed to shine

Re: How's the Weather Where You're At?
Temps fell below freezing the last two nights and we had some snow yesterday. My husband placed a tarp over the SFG bed where peas, lettuce, spinach, and radishes had sprouted. I removed it today and found that, other than one pea plant that got a little smashed by water standing on the tarp, everything else was fine.
Cloudy days have affected the seed starts in the bay window. Some of the plants are looking a little leggy, straining toward the light. Sunny days are in the forecast this week so I'll start taking plants outside daily for a little sunshine.
I started some herbs in peat pots and have found that they aren't doing near as well as seeds started in plastic trays. I think the peat pots are wicking the water away from the roots as the peat walls are moist but the soil seems to dry out rather quickly.
April 25th is supposed to be our last frost date. If I don't transplant the seed starts out to the garden in a few weeks, I'll have cucumbers, melons, squash, and zucchini climbing up the blinds.

Don't even dare to talk to me about global warming. It's not happening in my area. Temps are way below the normal average for this time of the year.

Re: How's the Weather Where You're At?
Updated forecast for the weekend:
- Saturday - 10 to 25 cm (4 to 10 inches) of snow
- Sunday - an abundance of freezing rain
Yikes! Will Spring ever arrive? On a positive note I did see the first robin of the year in my yard today.
