Gineen,
if they are the Nantes carrots then I think most people have found them slow. I planted mine 16th April and they are about 1 inch tall.

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
I planted some Danvers Half Long on 4/25 (the day my first square was filled) and they are up...though not very carrot-like yet. I normally don't try carrots since my 'real' soil was too clay. Now with MM I'm trying all kinds of root crops! They are in the middle two squares right beside my peas.
I planted radish, beets, carrot, onion, and some turnip to see how this mix does. You can see some lettuce and spinach in there too

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
Got the rest of my carrots planted tonight - 7 squares of Atomic Red and 18 squares of Cosmic Purple. Yep, loves me some carrots! That makes 37 squares total with my 12 squares of orange (4 squares Nantes) planted for Carrot Week.

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
I planted one square two weeks ago and discovered they needed to be watered regularly. I have been watering regularly since that discovery, but it could be too late, so might have lost that square. I planted another square of Nantes yesterday, and will be watering on a regular basis. I do see some stuff coming up in the first square, but I think its weeds. Not gonna pull anything till I see what they do. I'll keep ya's posted.

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
Ms. Cadene,
I planted a square of carrots way back in late feb under plastic. I too made the watering mistake. However, after I started to regularly water the area, the carrots ALL came up and are growing as well as a later more "tended" planting.

I found this but -warning - I've always heard carrots don't transplant well.

I planted mine near the end of April. You may be right on time because of your frost date.
If you hurry and if you plant in MM so that even an early frost doesn't freeze then into the soil, you should be able to harvest in the fall.

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
Nana if you have the space and the seed it is time to plant carrots. I grow the rainbow carrots, they make me smile and are tasty! Sow them thickly and thin as necessary.
Mine are finally coming along nicely.

LOL, just good 'ole Mel's Mix, plus I sow heavily, then thin. But really it's all in the Mel's mix and the WEATHER. Last year my carrots and beets were crap.

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
Here is my carrots so far,
I have 4 different kinds growing in the top layer of the pyramid garden, 14 inch carrots, 2 x 4 giant carrots, and some other giant carrots, black carrots and nantes carrots.
Then I have some of the 14 inch carrots growing in my SFG in a high rise, but it is only 10 inchs so I don't know what the other 4 inchs is going to do, we'll see.

Josh, you crack me up by the way everything grows so incredibly well for you! Maybe we should have a Show me your biggest Worm contest too, but... I believe you would win that one too.

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
I realized I hadn't posted any new photos for a while. SO, here's what survived the hailstorm (the carrots on the right). They're pretty bunched up, since my 5y/o planted a TON of seeds. I'm just glad there's still something growing for them. My younger son's so sweet he said he'd share his carrots with his big brother, who lost all of his carrots in the hailstorm, so big brother is helping water them now. They're a bit overshadowed by their neighbor carrots, which were planted only ten days earlier, and we only lost one of those in the hailstorm. I guess that extra ten days gave them more strength.
My boys are SO excited about this, they really want those carrots to be done growing so they can pull them! I just wonder how they'll react to a full-size carrot when it comes to eating them...they're so used to those little finger sized carrots, I'm not sure they'll recognize these.

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
My carrots are looking very small compared to all those. We have some wacky weather and I don't think they like it much. Will there be a scrawny/puny category for Carrot Week?

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
The weather has finally woken up and become good for growing carrots that .
I had several squares I thought were a write off ( sown in 10 to 17 April ) because germination is usually around 3 weeks .
I was going to plant brassicas in them to day and was pleasently to find some have sprouted through somewhat sparodically .
One square though seems to have a full house of 16 from 16 indiviaually sown seeds.
I reckon we are a good month beind normal years , for lettuce are still having to be transplants out the glass house . None of the square sown stuf has poked its cheery head up yet.
