CARROT WEEK HAS BEGUN!!!!
Hey everyone.....CARROT WEEK officially began today April 12th!
So get out there sometime between now and next Monday and PLANT THOSE CARROTS!
We want to hear all about it so keep us posted here on when you plant, what you plant and how many you plant and as soon as you get sprouts show us your carrots!
Everyone keep a close eye on Boffer and Josh...they are going to see who can grow the longest carrot and my bet is it will be super entertaining! Feel free to post some carrot recipes in the recipe forums and let's just have some fun with this!
Jennie
PS...sorry this post is so late...it's already been a long week and it's only TUESDAY for me.

Re: CARROT WEEK HAS BEGUN!!!!
I wish I was at home so I could plant my carrots NOW!!!! But, alas, I am away on business right now.
On the bright side, a few weeks ago I made my carrot seed tapes, so sowing them when I get back home will be easy pease! That is IF I HAVE A GARDEN LEFT! I've left my husband in charge of watering my babies. *gulp*

If you haven't seen it, the World Carrot Museum is interesting. The longest carrot on record is over 19 feet!!

Not me! I admit: I built my growing contraptions only 10 feet long.
Re: CARROT WEEK HAS BEGUN!!!!
Today it rained all day -- a real toad chokin' rain too. Tomorrow more rain, and more at the end of the week. Thursday is the only window to plant my carrots that "may" be partly sunny. I'm beginning to wonder if boffer sent that PNW weather to the East coast!

Silly question... What makes this Carrot week?
Is it carrot week only if it's warm enough to be carrot week?

Re: CARROT WEEK HAS BEGUN!!!!
Carrot Week is just a fun event we are doing together here on the forum....
You can read about it here: https://squarefoot.forumotion.com/t5124-if-you-carrot-all-for-sfg
A lot of northerners are doing their carrot week carrots in a container because their ground is still frozen.
For notherners it's too cold, but any later for the southerners it's too hot....April seemed the best compromise, hoping most everyone will be able to participate! We have a lot of good sport notherner's that will be sticking some carrots in any unfrozen soil they can find...since a loto f their SFG's are still under snow.

Fair enough question!
We have members complaining that it's getting too hot to plant carrots. We have members complaining that it's too cold to plant carrots. We have members complaining because that's what they know how to do best.
Picking carrot week was a compromise that has no chance of pleasing everyone. The fascinating part about participating on a world wide forum is observing and appreciating the pros and cons of weather that others are dealing with around the world. That's what carrot week is about. Are you in?

I'm in! I'm armed with 3 varrieties to choose from and vermiculite that I will try sprouting them in. If I can get little sprouts I'll even put them out into my covered bed. Happy carrot week! I'm glad to join in!

Will have to get my carrots planted tomorrow...
And it is supposed to snow on Friday/Saturday. Yup gotta love Iowa weather, highs in the 80's then snow.
As warm as it has been it will probably melt as soon as it hits the ground. Plus high is supposed to be in high 30's and low 40's.

Fantastic! How about just growing them in Mel's Mix in a bucket? You can start them inside where it's warm, and in 2-3 weeks when they sprout, move them outside?
I've never tried transplanting carrots. It's my understanding that it's an iffy proposition.

So, where can I file your complaint that we all complain?

Carrots in a bucket? I like it. I think i will try that. That would seem to work better for carrots that will grow taller than my 6" deep soil.

I just seeded one square with 32 "scarlet nantes" seeds. Two per hole.
I'm officially in the game.

Re: CARROT WEEK HAS BEGUN!!!!
I was thinking about inter-planting with radishes in the front of my zuch, straightneck and eggplant squares. The planter boxes for them ended up being 17" x 24" as that was the right size for the space...
