Re: Carrot Week 2012!
My scarlets were planted 4/18. The packet says this variety is slim and 6-7 inches long. Ok these carrots are little when mature, unlike the supermarket monsters that barely fit into the crisper drawer. Tomorrow I'll pull a couple of these cuties and post pics.

Oh wow, you guys! I want orange, too! When I go home for lunch I'll pull back my earth, and take a photo. How fun is that?!

There was no one more surprised than I was when I saw this:
How do you know when they are ready to pull? Do they continue to get bigger the longer you leave them in?

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
This week's pulls... pulled one from each variety to check the status. Danvers Half Long on the left, Scarlet Nantes on the right... both varieties planted during Carrot Week (I believe April 18-ish...).

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
I pulled a couple of scarlet nantes and one cosmic purple, couple beets and kohlrabi. The scarlets are almost the expected size of 6 inches according to the seed packet. The biggest one around 9 inches. Like Rooster said, the packet may say 70 days but you really can't go strictly by that. So I'll keep waiting.

Take a look at the shoulders then take a chance and pull it. The green top growth doesn't always give you the best clue. It's always a surprise : ) And I think its a gamble to leave them in the ground a very long time, I think they can get woody tasting.

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
OK, thanks llama momma. I'll wait til my mom gets here from FL tonite. Tomorrow we will pull beets, carrots, radishes (5th batch) and zucchini together, since it's my first garden. THAT will be an exciting thing to do together!
Actually, I set up the boxes last fall for HER to grow veggies in this year when she came north but she was delayed due to health issues so I ended up doing it and now I"m hooked!
I'll have photos tomorrow!
Btw, your veggies look beautiful! What's that green thing at the bottom?

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
CC-- have fun with your Mom and the garden, pretty neat how you got hooked.
That's kohlrabi at the bottom of the picture. Peeled and sliced raw in salad tastes like mild flavored broccoli, can be sauteed etc, think you can use it almost any way you want.

Just for fun, I felt around in the Mel's Mix this morning and picked a carrot that felt like it had a fairly decent shoulder on it. It was sweet, tender, and delicious.

Nice! I have no idea what is going on underground in my carrot patch. However the foliage is going gangbusters.

GOT ONE!!!
I couldn't help myself and just had to pull a carrot week carrot...and it looks good! And tasted OK...not as sweet as I was hoping though. I'll wait to pull the others to see if they get any bigger.
Here's my first carrot week carrot with Mom showing off her mani:
Hey Damon...was your camera attached to your head on the video? How'd you do that???

Mine are nantes, too, but aren't there different kinds of Nantes?
You gonna make me to dig mine out of the fridge to see if it has another name???
OK, Scarlet Nantes and not sweet. What are your sweet ones, Rooster?
Damon, I didn't know that HatCam existed. Thanks! Mom and I had a good laff picturing me running around with my Kodak attached to the bill of a baseball cap.

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
CapCoddess, A lot of fishermen use it these days when recording fishing shows.
Whenever I'm doing gardening chores, I don the "Greenhorn Gardening Cam" as I call it. All I have to do is flip one button and start talking.

Oh, sorry. I hope I didn't step across any bounds. I just joined the forum not long ago. Chantenay's were the carrot I planted this season.
