After working in the garden most of the day, I was eating my late afternoon lunch & poking around on the internet, I stumbled upon this great blog entry. For those of you new to gardening in general, on this list you will find some of the best garden books written in our times. A special thank you to the original blogger! http://gardendesk.blogspot.com/2009/03/my-25-favorite-gardening-books.html sunny

What a great list! I'm always looking for more reading options to check out from the library! There are some great books in this group. Can't wait to see if my library has some of them.

Thanks again for sharing Smile

Hi everyone, those of us in the northern climes are putting our beds up for the winter and prepping for hunkering down for the long, cold, dark of winter. I thought it would be nice to share our winter reading lists.

I swear by the book written by Barbara Damrosch, called The Garden Primer. She gives good advice about many vegetables, from asparagus to zucchini. While she uses mainly the traditional garden approach, she does describe how to plant in blocks and grids. I recommend it highly. The thing with gardening books is that they really never become out of date. After all, broccoli has probably been growing for millions of years.

Thanks Camprn....awesome find. Just bought a good as new used copy of the Rolane Encyclopedia you posted for 57 cents on amazon !!! (you have to add 3.99 for shipping as its from a third party vendor...but still...what a bargain) Also bought Rolanes Composting guide amongst others on the list of 25 ! Also friends, checkout the "Storey's Country Wisdom Bulletins" if you are not aware of them. All are only about $2 each (I paid 78 cents!) and have all sorts of homesteading nuggets (storing foods, making Apple Cider Vinegar etc) to accompany the practices of SFG. I went for the build your own underground root cellar.

I love anything written by eliot coleman! he really explains things well as well as giving truly helpful information for the new and experienced gardener alike.

i particuolarly enjoy his 4 season harvest book. i'm often requesting it and borrowing it from my local library.

there's another author i really enjoy as well - i'll go hunt him up and post. i think he's canadian. he put out a bunch of videos that i enjoy watching in the winter on seed starting, etc.

i'm just blanking out at moment his name. (perhaps because i have a little person tapping on my hip wanting me to open a bag of cat treats for the 4 legged critter, lol)

Camprn, imagine 1800 row feet of produce for an average man to supply his vegetable needs for one year.
The Victoy Garden Handbook provides such an amazing look at what our country went thru in the early and mid-40's trying to provide for its citizens.

thanks Thank you for providing the link.

I am so glad we found SFG so we can at least supplement our veggies using much easier and intensive growing methods.

Ugh! I simply don't want to think about how much work that was/is! Those were tough times indeed.

it's very interesting to see!

i'm having such fun reading thru that handbook - so much of it is talking about nutritional needs - and how the average american is deficient - even then!

thanks so much for sharing this little ebook! Smile

Just thumbing through it, and it four books organized into one. The first part focuses on Your Healthy Garden. The second part focuses on Symptoms and Solutions (with quite a comprehensive list of trees, shrubs, bulbs, fruits, vegetables and herbs). The third part focuses on Identifying Pests and Diseases, and the fourth part focuses on Organic Pest and Disease Management. I'll be reading through it to form a quick reference chart for anyone on this forum.

Hi,

I have seed to seed. It is very good, but pretty technical. It would be my choice for a second seed saving book, after you understand the basics. Having said that, it is still very readable if you only get one book. Happy reading.
