oh and yeah they might be crooked when they come up but they still taste the same. Not ideal but I might just win the ugliest carrot prize!

Hmm, I don't recall mentioning prizes
This is all just for forum fun and comparison
And I don't mind crooked carrots either.

Rats! I was COUNTING on winning that supply of Llama Poo! Oh well, I guess I will just have to be satisfied with carrots - if they ever sprout! Checked again this morning - volunteer Cilantro, Quack Grass, and holes from the neighbor's dog! Still waiting for some carrot sprouts. Out of 12 sq ft of them you would think I would get at least ONE!!!

Finally!!!
I'm thinking the "watched pot" adage was at work-lol. I have been checking the carrot box every morning while doing my rounds and nothing. Had a very busy weekend no time for morning stroll. Just went out to look 5 sprouts!!! out of 16 planted for carrot week. 3 sprouts in the other box. YEAH!

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
My son planted a 1 sq ft planter of nantes coreless and chantenay red on Apr 21. (I think) we have sprouts in both halves but more of the nantes coreless. I mentioned thinning them to him and he didn't seem very impressed with the thought so we may have some funky looking carrots come harvest!

That will just make them all the more fun for him, I bet!
Re: Carrot Week 2012!
Only thing I can add is: our April 12 carrots planted in very large black pot is just now showing their true leaves. We're overhauling the garden, installing four new 4'x4' beds, and arches of cattle panel. Two southern squares, and two northern (adjacent to arches) are set aside for grandkids to plant next weekend when they visit. Wanna bet the south squares are planted in carrots? These are the two Wasscally Wabbits that ate most of last year's April 15 planting!

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
Well, my older son officially lost his last Carrot Week sprout yesterday. I guess it just wasn't strong enough to overcome the pounding it got from the hailstorm over the weekend. He's pretty bummed. I promised him we'd still have carrots, just not his carrots from that square.
My younger son still has about half of his carrots, so he's going to "share" his Carrot Week carrots with his brother. He's so sweet!
Our carrot planting is over until September, but we have learned a lot from this whole experience so hope to have better crops in the fall plantings.

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
Ah, Michelle, please give your son my condolances as well. Hail just isn't something we can anticipate. Tell him we're all waiting to hear how his fall carrot planting came out. Is he planting the same variety, or something different?

O bummer I was looking forward to his carrots. How are his other garden projects doing? Does he still have plants he is fussing over as his own?

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
Oops, I appear to have missed the point of "Carrot Week" (but not really). I haven't posted, and even missed reading other posts, like GG's comment on my round square "bucket" improvisation, and aerinh's confirmation of The Carrot Seed book, as well as other people's various problems and triumphs.
Well, I've had carrot sprouts for (?) a week or two, I think. One of those "watched pot" things: I kept checking, then I didn't, then I saw some. (I can't post any pictures, no cell/camera available today) I guess I do have to get out there and remove some maple seeds, before any of them start growing. Pain in the, um, neck, having my squares partly under the tree -- and the branch that cracked in the freak October Nor'easter (but is still alive) seems to have even more seeds than the rest of the tree. And guess what that branch overhangs?!
I have that whole box protected from critter-nibbling with a cage around the whole thing, which is good because every morning I see a cute bunny hopping along in my backyard, and I think it, or the other one it was playing with 2 days ago, just might be the one who went after some of my boyfriend's tender plants before he reinforced the perimeter with chicken wire.

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
Thanks guys. I'm sure I'll be posting the photos of future carrot crops in the fall.
The boys are trying out some mammoth sunflowers of their own, too. We haven't had any sprouts from those yet, but hopefully any day now. Honestly, they both go out and check the whole garden every day, but the older son examines things pretty closely for a kid who claims the only thing he'll eat out of the garden is the carrots. Right now he's keeping track of the cayenne peppers and tomatoes that look pretty close to getting ripe.

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
Sorry to hear about the carrots stamps
Mine are on the SLOW train
Most of mine did germinate. I have however lost a few to our lovely winds... Just for grins, I am going to sow a few Little Fingers in the missing squares.

I don't have pictures, but planted three different kinds, including Paris Market. Everything's doing well. Planted in middle march and they should be ready by Memorial Day weekend. I've learned to be patient with carrots and they will be fine.

One month after planting, here are my carrots, going slowly and as you can see I haven't gotten around to thinning them yet!

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
Is there something going on with carrots?
I planted mine in mid April. Nothing, nothing, nothing
Finally I got about a 50% germination rate. I have grown carrots many many times before and they never took this long to come up. I was ready to give up on them and plant something else in the bed when I saw the first glimmers of what I hoped was carrot seed leaves.
Indeed it was, but I can't for the life of me figure out why they took so long to come up.
Public apology -- All local birds, I am sorry I accused you for eating all my carrot seeds, It was wrong of me, and I am sorry... That said I still blame you for eating all my spinach seeds!

Thanks for the update.
My carrot box has sprouts galore, and since they were sowed 16+ per square I'm hoping that thinning will be minimal. I'll snap a few pics this weekend.
But, do you remember my "Nantes Experiment" from earlier this season? Well, the 3 survivors are looking pretty good! They've been growing for nearly 2 weeks in my grandson's micro garden.
Thought you'd like to see 'em!
