Carrot Week 2013
Surprise! Surprise! Guess what time it is again already
Are you in the planning stages for your 2013 garden? Have a couple of empty squares you don't really know what to do with yet, or perhaps you anticipated a little sumthin, sumthin and left a couple open on purpose?
Well, your assumptions were correct! It's time for our 3rd annual Carrot Week.
Let's change things up a bit this year. How about some colors? Colorful carrots. Scarlet, purple, yellow. You name it, any color goes this year. So get out those catalogs or head to the garden centers and get those colorful seeds before they're all snatched up.
As in years past, this is just forum fun and a time to bond and share your carrots with others. It's a great way to get your kids involved in the garden and a fun way to get them to eat their veggies
Be sure to check in often with updates and pictures of your carrots and their progress. We all love to see the funny shapes, sizes and this year, the colors! Giant carrots, funky carrots, ugly carrots, twisted, fat or bumpy, lumpy carrots! Let's see them all. So secure those seeds, and get those boxes ready!
Carrot Week Begins On April 15th!!!
As years past, let's do three days before the 15th, and three days after. So, the 15th is on a Monday. You can plant your carrots anywhere from Friday, April 12, thru Thursday, April 18.
And don't forget to pay your taxes by Monday April 15th!

Re: Carrot Week 2013
I had already ordered both Rainbow and Atomic Reds this year so this is a welcome thread. I'll be planting this spring and keeping a close watch.
Last year my Nantes didn't mature til late in the season so I never posted the results but they tasted good for Thanksgiving.
It'll be fun to see pics of the colorful harvests this year.

I am in. My first crop was a flop. I mixed them in under the tomatoes. Punie would have been a success. Last fall I tried again much better results some made the 4 inch range. I planted too many seed for the space and did not thin.

Re: Carrot Week 2013
I'm up for it .. will have to buy more seed .
I have already got six or seven packets of seeds for normal carrots .
Alison told me , " Don't bother buying those fancy seed you're looking at, we have enough carrot seeds to feed a horse & foal for a year ".

Lol, mom knows best
David, I've searched all over here in the US for true black carrots. Very dark purples can be found, but not true blacks. At least not that I can find. I've seen they are more readily available on your side of the pond. I would love to have someone here be able to plant some true blacks.
I've found some dark purples here:
http://www.territorialseed.com/product/12052
And Amazon has some that have a good rating as well:

Just in case anyone is interested

Springing in
I've not done carrot week with the board, but I did it every year.... that doesn't make sense, right. This year I'm not doing a Toy Box thread, Gwennifer and the gang at the PNW do such an awesome job that it is silly. So this year I'm a joiner.
Debs....who wonders if she can get some of these to grow sideways.
Re: Carrot Week 2013
I've just been looking at the seed sources in my favourites drop down .. can't find any black ones as such , just a few purple ones like the Amazon link but no blacks .

Is daikon a white carrot?
No, it's a radish. Or at least a root vegetable that tastes like a radish.
