Nonna.PapaVino wrote:Rooster, next time try for a head shot, before the skunk gets its tail up. The dad of a childhood friend found a skunk in the henhouse and proceeded as mentioned above. It didn't even have a chance to release its chemicals, which must meet air to develop the smell. We kids, of course, hurried out to the henhouse to see what we could see: nothing interesting, a bit of blood, but no stink.
I thought I had carried out a pretty good shot, but the skunk raised it's tail and released every bit of stank nectar he had left before punching out. Usually a shot to the noodle works, but unfortunately it didn't this time. I had to shoot while it was in the pen so it wasn't the most perfect of shots with all the wire. The stench is awful out there!
I think this skunk was sick. We've had one wondering around in the day and you could smell skunk throughout the day here and there. It's pretty unsual for a skunk to be out prowling around during the day. We also keep radios around all of our coops and it's worked for years keeping the critters away. This one could have cared less. There's been a pretty bad rabies problem so far this spring in our county with skunks also, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was sick.
I've been known to have a conversation or two while working in the garden. Course I'll talk to the car, the tractor, the wheelbarrow and just about anything else too

I talk to my plants, the seeds, the boxes, the trellises, the bunny in the yard, and to the cats when they come to the screen door to see what I am doing! I wonder if the neighbors have been searching for the nearest psych ward.....
PS - found the bunny lair, the opening to the den was at the back of my 'soon to be' herb bed. I didn't have the heart to block it in case there are babies. About 20 minutes later I saw a young bunny hopping across the patio. Couldn't have been more than 6 inches long. Too cute! I may just have to share my celery plants with it. (it is not big enough to make a stew or slippers)

Hahaha, this is exactly what I made a joke about to hubby. On mother's day I was in the back garden planting all my flowers and some seeds and I would talk to them out loud like who's next or here is your new home. I told hubby that if people were walking the trail they might think I'm a loon, lol, now he thinks I am... I can't wait to show him this thread I think it's weird that he says he never talks out loud when he's alone!

First a hole in mel's mix. But how could it be voles/moles with hardware cloth and a critter cover? Then I saw it. Then there were two of them. The holes are where the little toads perhaps go to cool off. They were 2 of them sitting under the lettuce leaves when I pulled out a couple of the bitter tasting plants. Of course I talked to the toads. Cute and helpful critters. Hope they stick around and maybe hang out under the spinach leaves.

Re: Senseless Banter...
Is it Friday yet???
I got a call at about 9 a.m. this morning from my wife saying that one of the boys had had an accident at school. My first thought? Well, my first thought was that my 10 YEAR OLD had pooped his pants! Ahhhhh, no such luck!
I rushed him in and they thought they could do a partial root canal, but once they got in there they found the roots had already died and had to do a full root canal
What a way to start the summer

Lol, Cindi it slowed him down about as long as he had to sit in the chair...afterwards I dropped him off at the park to finish out the day with his buddies. He hasn't missed a beat. Me, I'm still the bill. I guess it's payback. I got my same tooth knocked out when I was about his age

Re: Senseless Banter...
Camp, the school nurse was great as always! She's taken great care of all 3 of my kids while in school there. She called later in the afternoon to see how Jake was
Lol, the only painful part for dad was breaking out the wallet. It makes me cringe at all the money I've dumped into my kids mouths! All three have/had braces. Jake has had his out for a few months and has a retainer...which I'm sure will need to be refit now
When I went to check out at the dentist, the receptionist told me the total (like I had that much just burning a hole in my pocket ) She could see the look in my eyes and said "kids are kinda expensive huh?"
And yes, the boys think having half a tooth is cool

GG, Jake is just fine and hasn't missed a beat! Thanks for asking.
The twins are at a sleep over at one of their best buddies house and the 3 of them are hellions for sure when they get together Of course he loves all the attention I am super proud of him. He worked really, really hard all semester and FINALLY made honor roll He surprised me with that later in the evening. It was an incredible accomplishment for him

Way to go Rooster's son! That had to be extra hard to go all out with summer vacation thoughts distracting him. A lot of students would run out of smoke by the end of the school year.

Rooster, my daughter did that quite awhile back with a dirt bike she didn't have any knowledge of riding and should not have been on it in the first place. It's traumatic and expensive. We used our medical insurance and homeowner's accident insurance. The receptionist didn't know how to submit it and acted like we were trying to do something illegal. Luckily the dentist knew what should be done. Something to keep in mind! The dentist submitted the bills to both and each paid 50%. Wonderful for him being on the Honor Roll!!! Wow, twin boys, that says it all!

Re: Senseless Banter...
Finally, good news! I was assigned my community garden plot yesterday! I've been waiting for it since last spring.
Did a lot of haggling because I had been skipped over early this spring; and practically had to threaten them to get a plot.
I'll have a BIG project just clearing it. Seems no one has worked it in years! I have weeds almost waist high, found there were strawberry(bearing berries) plants under some of that foliage! Trying to clear at least that area so the plants can breathe.
There are so many stones and pieces of brick, well, mostly full and half bricks, I may have to screen the soil before I can work it.
Then they tell me some inspectors will be coming by on June 23rd! "Will you be able to get something planted by then?" AARRRRRGGGHHHH!!!!
Well, back to work. Want to at least get the berry plants uncovered and the perimeter determined. Wish me luck.
