43 years a gardener and going strong with SFG.

Re: Senseless Banter...
True story - I've been saving my strawberries for my 8 year old niece to come over and pick. She and my sister love strawberries. Since I didn't have that many plants, they got maybe about a pint of them....
Here is the funny part, I thought my niece (who is a typical city girl) would be excited about the strawberries....
Do you know what she was excited about? The wonderful little green caterpillars that were on my broccoli leaves that she could take home and put in her butterfly cage! Seriously! The very thing I go out and smush is exactly what she wanted. So we wrapped them and some leaves up in tulle, clamped it, and let her take it home to put in her butterfly cage to see what would happen.....
Whodathunk?!

cloche
I wasn't sure how to pronounce this word so I looked it up. Merriam-webster told me two different ways.

As it should be! There is a rabbit in our neighborhood that may be joining the skunk if I catch it at my boxes again.....

Remember, acidic wash to get the smell off - tomato juice, lemon juice, vinegar, etc!

Re: Senseless Banter...
Ugh! Skunk removal was NOT fun this morning My clothes will have to be thrown out (second ones in a yr from skunk ) and my boots reeeek!
The best remedy we have found for skunk smell is hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and a few drops of dish soap. Nothing but time seems to get rid of the smell completely, but this mixture has been the best removal I've found.

Re: Senseless Banter...
Speaking of skunks, has anyone seen a white skunk? Not an albino but a white skunk with a black stripe.
I lived in the part of the city that had lots of stray cats and I would put out food each night hoping to snare them for "fixing". One night I thought I heard one eating and opened the door. Walking away from me was what I thought was a white cat, until I noticed its waddle. Focusing better I saw it was a white skunk! Never saw him again.
BTW - just came across this site. Has some great info and can get free seeds.

Linda, love the pics of the skunk colors. Never knew that there were so many! The white and brown chip looks closest to what I saw.

Re: Senseless Banter...
Rooster, next time try for a head shot, before the skunk gets its tail up. The dad of a childhood friend found a skunk in the henhouse and proceeded as mentioned above. It didn't even have a chance to release its chemicals, which must meet air to develop the smell. We kids, of course, hurried out to the henhouse to see what we could see: nothing interesting, a bit of blood, but no stink.

I am wondering does anybody talk out loud when they are alone to themselves or their plants while in the garden? I can't be the only one...

Re: Senseless Banter...
I do! Hi, My name is Nonna and I talk to inanimate green things. However, having said that, you'd have been pleased to hear I also talk to vertibrates, in loud, inarticulate schreeks when moving a ground cover and finding a newly skin-shed garter snake....up close and personal. Epilogue: It went one way, I went the other.

I had my kids sing to my plants. I told them that it helps them grow. The kids got right to work and sang several songs to my spinach and lettuce
