I don't know what it is with me and skunks the past year or so. I hit one with the car this morning on the way to work...That makes at least 4 run ins with skunks in a year tongue

Perhaps it was just a good year for skunk propagation. Throughout the summer, PapaVino managed to shoot 4 around back of the house by the wood shed. Never have seen so many around here. Nonna

One thing I do not miss from Oregon. Have not seen hide nor tail darn funny of a skunk since I left Oregon
ACTUALLY our dog DID go after one here last summer and got a faceful.
AND I had just made roasted tomato sauce and so NO WAY was I going to put my home made tomato sauce on my smelly dog. Hence..... he stunk for a long time

Okay, here's the recipe for skunk stink removal solution (BTW, this solution also works on cat urine stink--both contain the same stink ingredients):

In a plastic bucket (not metal), mix the following ingredients thoroughly:

1 quart of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
1/4 cup of baking soda
1 tablespoon of liquid dishwashing soap (Ivory is recommended)

For very large pets you can double the recipe (recommended) or you can add one quart of lukewarm tap water to provide complete coverage.

Wash your dog (or self, depending) thoroughly, working the solution deep into the fur. Make sure you really saturate the areas where the victim took the direct hits. Your nose knows.

Skunks usually aim for the face, but try to keep the solution out of the dog's eyes, as it can sting. Keeping a bottle of pure water nearby to rinse the eyes is a good idea.

Leave the solution on for at least 5 minutes or until the odor is gone. You may need to rinse and repeat with some of the more stinky areas.

After you’re done, thoroughly rinse your pet with lukewarm water.

Pour the remaining solution down the drain while running water, because it cannot be stored in closed bottles due to the chemical reaction of the hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. The pressure will build up until the container bursts.

I've used a very similar recipe to get skunk spray off of dogs - 1 little box of baking soda, 1 bottle hydrogen peroxide, 1 teaspoon dish soap, then add a little water to the mix. It really does work. Unfortunately I've had to "test" it over and over...you'd think these dogs would learn!

Nonna's mix may very well be the original recipe though, because I got this from my cousin that likes to simplify recipes...and math isn't her strength. Laughing

Glad to know it will also work on cat urine!

+1 to both of the above posts! Nonna, and Jill you've both obviously dealt with the issue lol. That same concoction is what we generally use as well...don't work so good on the auto unfortunately No Imo, tomato juice or the like does nothing.

Oh Rooster that must have permeated everything! If you haven't used your heater or fan yet, I would wait until you get rid of the smell. I'm sure you have already thought about that one. So what do you do then for/to your car?

My dogs got skunked over ten years ago in the middle of the night in my back yard. We were not sure what they were carrying on about and my daughter let them in. The smell went through the whole house. My daughter and husband thought the smell was coming in from outside because we would smell skunk but not to the level we were smelling it then. The smell was so strong and to get away from it they went for a drive. I was too tired to deal with it and covered my head and went back to sleep. When they came back they realized the dogs smelled horrendous and put them back outside. The next day we called around and found tomato juice is not very effective and got a bottle of Skunk Off from the vet. We had to get another bottle to get the rest of the smell out. My daughter volunteered and did all of the bathing and did a great job.

My son's father-in-law's dog got skunked last year. He was an outside dog and so they thought he would air out over time which they thought he did. A few months later my son's sister-in-law decided to do a nice thing for her father and took the dog into the dog groomer at PetsMart to get a bath. The bath activated the smell and the whole store reeked of skunk! How embarassing would that be!

I don't envy you Rooster! Can you make enough of the concoction to soak your whole car? Let us know what you end up doing and good luck!

The last time my pooch got skunked it was 5 minutes before I was leaving for the airport at 4:30 am... I left it all and $50 to my 18 year old son and Petco to handle whist I was off galavanting through Turkey.

I wish I could have avoided using the heater! Unfortunately, it was like 10° out and snowing. I washed the car today a couple of times and loaded up with air fresheners. Now it smells like a fresh spring and skunk! lol, I would give up $50 in a heartbeat to be done with this! I will say it's not as bad as when the dogs have been sprayed though.
When it warms up a bit, I'm going on a skunk hunt rampage around the place. We can't use poison because we have barn cats and I don't relocate skunks. If I see em get that pesky wabbi carrot

I bet you were happy to be leaving camprn!

Yeah those air freshners don't do what they say they will! I would go hunting also, it is more humane than poison anyway!

Rooster, PapaVino swears by a live trap bated with can of cheap catfood punctured with an old-fashioned church key. Some of the skunk smell removal concoction is used to de-odorize the live trap, and some to remove smell from the wood pile. (You know that stuff can even leak out of the woodstove when you burn sprayed wood?) It also helped remove the smell from the hem of my Levis when I stepped out of the truck next to the newly occupied live trap. BTW, PapaV recommends a hole at least 18" deep for the dearly departed stinker. Nonna

Well we lived to wrestle another week! My seven year old got 4th at districts so we are on to regions next weekend! Should be fun! It was a great tourney, he sat out on a cradle for the first time and had a couple of BIG wins! I am going to be sad when it's over.

Post  Triciasgarden 3/15/2013, 8:45 pm

I haven't been on here for maybe a few weeks. I had to get ready for company coming to stay with me and then I was so enjoying them. My oldest sister and her son came to stay for about five days and I already miss them. They left about 7:00 a.m. Wednesday and around 2:30 that afternoon I sprained my ankle and have a brace and am on crutches. I was really expecting it to be broken but I have saved my record of never having a broken bone. At least I waited until they were gone!

I went to a home and garden show last week and had so much fun! I have been so anxious to get seeds started indoors, get my compost turned, and other fun stuff. I still have plenty of seeds to buy and I am still in the process of deciding what to get. Boy this is not what I was expecting but that is life. One of my sons said he would turn my compost piles. Maybe it won't be so bad after all, lol!

I am supposed to mostly stay off my foot for three days and ice it every few hours. Yeah that is happening, I am stubborn. My son who lives here has been working and going to school and his schedule is not exactly the same as mine but he is helping when I ask and tells me to wake him up when I need help. I just don't like to wake people up.

I did crutch out to my garden today to open the gate and leave it open because there was a "cat" in there and my dogs could not get to it to scare it off. Some of you may remember my invasion from last year where there was constant new poop in my beds. Almost as quickly as I cleaned it out, there was new poop and they kept digging up my plants and burying others. I caught nine ferrel cats and animal control took them away. There are more but until today, I thought they had gotten the message to stay out of my garden.

I do have to add that I got five bags of rabbit manure a few weeks ago. I went on a rabbit breeder internet site and found a breeder in my city. It turned out that they were only three blocks from me! I am invited to go back anytime because there is always plenty! Woo hoo!
