I just looked at the package of carrot seeds that I got from of all places, Aldi, and they say Nantes on them! I figured there was no way I'd be able to find that kind of seed and I already have it in my drawer. We will be planting either today or tomorrow b/c we are out all day on Thursday. I hope they will do well!

I am going to plant in a rd tub that I got at Wally World. I will mark it off in the shape of a pie so maybe Mel won't be too mad. I will probably kill the carrots anyway. I noticed on the package that it said they were easy to grow(which in my case is the kiss of death)!

I'll be planting a square even though I'm not sure if it'll even germinate in our heat. But in honor of Carrot Week I pulled my first Parisenne carrot that I planted back at the first of the year. Also got my first tomato of the year (Matt's Wild Cherry). As you can see, they're close to the same size, lol.

I got my nantes carrot seeds planted after work this evening.

The wind was so bad I had to stop at that. I had to clean up a tomato plant where the wind snapped the first blooms off and break the bad news to hubby (about his tomato) Sad

So hope for less wind tomorrow so I can get more work done.

Got mine in last night! Scarlet Nantes. It is the only filled box in my garden so far, and the only one that will be entirely with my home compost - which was comprised of everything garden, garbage, and kitchen!

Even though we had house guests this weekend, I dashed out yesterday morning and planted two squares of nantes carrots: Yaya and Coreless. Gonna put in some Nantes Fancy in another square today. From the Pacific Northwest....WE HAVE SUN TODAY!

Post  kjenkins82 4/17/2011, 4:32 pm

I was going to sit this one out since I had already planted 3 varieties of carrots, but I was at the nursery getting some worm castings yesterday and was drawn to the seed racks. I told myself firmly that I didn't need any more seeds and certainly not any more carrots, but this one particular pack of Scarlet Nantes just wouldn't take no for an answer. Unbeknownst to me, it somehow worked its way into my basket and while I'm almost certain I didn't plant anything this afternoon, for some inexplicable reason I have dirt under my fingernails. Hmmm....

Oh, yes - seeds jumping into the cart is a problem I have as well! I am SO glad I have good company.
We had a storm hit us on Friday so I didn't get my second crop of carrots planted, and then yesterday and today I had to work - I may go out before it gets dark and plant a square - I have a few empty squares - and two boxes still to fill with dirt.

If You CARROT all for SFG... - Page 8 Empty The Procrastination Queen does it again!!

Post  Old Hippie 4/18/2011, 8:48 pm

It's the last day of Carrot Week and I planted two "squares" of Nantes carrots. One square is in one of my 4x4 boxes which is covered by an acrylic dome we saved last fall from a renovation project my DH knew about at his work. It is not true Mel's Mix but amended garden soil so I have transgressed. Embarassed The other square is in a 13 inch square planter that is 12 inches deep and is pure Mel's Mix. When I went looking for manures and composts I could only find four and actually I think they really only count as three because steer and cattle manure are pretty much the same thing. But I found a bucket of my own screened compost from last year in the shed so added that to the mix. My square planter is on the front porch which gets nice and warm during the day because it faces south. So my experiment is to see which of my two squares does the best.......the one in the garden with protection or the one in the pure Mel's Mix on the front porch.

It snowed a tiny bit on me while I was doing it but I am done!!!
