Quick carrot question. Has anyone had success growing carrots on the north side of a trellis? I know I can put lettuce in there, but am thinking of doing a row of carrots on the backside. In August when the cherry tomato takes over the world, I think whatever is there will end up getting about 4-5 hrs of afternoon sun, and maybe a little in the morning too. I think I may have too many carrots anyway so I might go ahead and try it, just wondering if anyone else did this and it worked (or was a horrible failure).

The carrots I planted last April grew to be 3x bigger than the ones I planted in May. All other factors were the same. (I don't know about the moon's phase.) That makes me think that the crucial development happens when it's cooler. I'll be trying the same thing again this year.

In your back row, you might try stagger planting the squares to see how they develop. I don't think the summer shade will affect them.

I'm in! I can't remember what variety I planted last year but they didn't do super well so I'm game to try Nantes. Darn, now I'll have to go look at seeds again...I guess I shall force myself.

I know, isn't it awful that you HAVE to go out again and look for more seeds?

I am one of those people that needs adult supervision when I go to the Territorial Seed Co. store in Cottage Grove, OR. It is only about 80 miles away and I went Nutso when I last visited them a few weeks ago! Very Happy Any garden plans I had made went right out the window. I now have more packages of seed than I have planned squares in my garden Shocked

At least now, I have seeds to donate to the Community Garden here in town and that is after I start all these different varieties of peppers, tomatoes, herbs, lettuces and beans and - and - and - the list goes on.

If You CARROT all for SFG... - Page 5 601593 I have to figure out what I am doing lol..I have myself so far behind in planning! I have my salad beds planned, and a bed for my brassicas. But I still have two more beds, carrots, beans, kohlirabi, turnips, and much more I want to get in there, Onions, garlic already in, more I can't think of right now. Plus I have cherry bushes, blueberry, and hybiscus coming.

I did get some help today to move the peat to the garden area lol...child labor laws are not viable in NaNa's garden.

Thanks to all for the warm welcomes. This is such a friendly group!

I did read the book, and I'm sure I'll be referring back to it many times throughout the year.

If you would have told me 3 months ago that I was going to garden in my back yard, and even think about setting up a "wiggler Hilton", I would have thought you were nuts. But it's all true, and now I can't wait for spring to get here!

If You CARROT all for SFG... - Page 5 Empty Yay, more carrots!

Post  Megan 2/25/2011, 4:38 pm

Well, I started out with one type of carrot, was sent some Nantes seed (thanks!!), and now I have two more types to try! I ordered White Belgian carrot seed from Baker Creek (among other things) just to see what they were like, and the free seed pack they sent along was another carrot, Parisienne!

So, crossing my fingers here, it looks like I'll have at least 4 squares of carrots this year! The simplest thing to do is probably to re-purpose my 1x4 high-rise box that I made last year for the potatoes. (The potatoes, this year, will probably go into a bin I'll make from wood recycled from pallets.)

Can someone help point me in the right direction on what seed to get? I happened to stumble into these on the web...

http://www.parkseed.com/gardening/PD/5741/
- or maybe this one -
http://www.parkseed.com/gardening/PD/5879/

Is Park Seed Co. a good place to get seeds? Is there a better place?

I also looked at Baker Creek, but they didn't have anything called Nantes.

Sorry for all the questions (and more to come, I'm sure...)

No need to apologize for asking questions! Smile That's part of what we are here for.

Nantes is a descriptor for a growth habit of carrots. I simply don't know them well enough to be able to say which of Baker Creek's are Nantes-type. Embarassed

The Parks website looks fine, but you might want to check our seed database, too; it could be that someone has some they could share with you.

I had looked at Dollar General where someone said they found them...no luck in my area (no seeds there at all). But just last night I found 25 cent packets of Scarlet Nantes at Dollar Tree! Yay! Going to save a shady spot and try to grow carrots in the heat.

I simply can't wait till it warms just a bit more so I can plant my carrots! We had the most amazing crop of carrots last year. I got the seeds from Nichol's Garden Nursery. The variety was called Envy...large, long and sweet and big in diameter as well! This year the variety has been upgraded and is now called Baltimore. I simply can't see how they could improve upon it..at least for our area. I buy from Nichol's Garden Nursery every year...great small and friendly business to work with. Wonderful catalog, too. Check them out at http://www.nicholsgardennursery.com/
Hope that is ok to endorse a company like that!

I took my grandson (5) yesterday to plant some carrots while he was here. When I pulled out the seed packet he wanted to know where the carrots where. I explained we were planting carrot seeds that would become carrots soon. When we were done he said "Okay, let's go inside and wait on the carrots". Grandkids, gotta love 'em.

I was thinking the same thing, how "awful"! Smile
You're near Territorial? I love the catalog, can't imagine being "in it" so to speak--and I still miss the summer I spent in Eugene, then just got moved in to Portland, for a month-- when I got sick and had to come running home to CT (one of the great what-ifs of my life).
I live about a half-hour from Comstock, Ferre & Co., (one of?) the oldest seed companies around (which went out of business, but was resurrected by Baker Creek). I went in there the other day, needing to 'use the facilities' which they don't have available, so it saved my boyfriend from forcibly dragging me out.
I still have carrot seed from them from last year, Parisienne and Tonda di Parigi, as well as a pack and a half of Botanical Interests' Little Finger Baby Carrot. I just may have to get back over to Wethersfield, for a packet of Nantes. (Never mind that there does seem to be a sealed pack of Burpee organic Scarlet Nantes that the Other Half picked up at Walmart last year, in this pile. I know I'll come up with some reason that it's not Twisted Evil good enough)
And though it may be a little too soon, I couldn't help it-- I got the old winter leaves off one of my frames, and had to get in to the Mix! Carrots is one square I planted the other day, as well as a double square of lettuce mix, and some radishes. Yeah, that was my reason for going to Comstock--gotta have more radish seed, as well as the "Clydes Garden Planner" I read about.

I felt the same way about Baker Creek! I visited their new Seed Bank in Petaluma, CA last year on Jan. 1 as I was driving through on vacation. I grew up out there and had to see what they had done with the old Savings Bank that they re-did for the seed store. They were supposed to be closed on Jan. 1 but were in there setting out all the new stock and decided to unlock the doors bacause of all the holiday foot traffic - good thing for me since I had come 2000 miles to see them!
