Scarlet Nantes is just fine. The plan is for everyone to plant nantes style carrots on April 15, because the nantes typically don't grow over 6 inches so that will fit in most SFG beds.

Mine are Scarlett Nantes as well - if no one else has the scarlett variety, we can be the oddballs together!

Re: If You CARROT all for SFG...
I got some Mezza Lunga Nantes. I actually already planted some last week (it's been in the 80s!), so I'll plant some more on April 15.
New to the site and I'm in !
Hi, I just joined the forum today. The first thing I saw was the carrot growing challenge. I'm in, I'll be respresenting the Home of Little League. I accept this challenge as I peer out the window at 3" of snow and now, it's sleeting.

We had the reverse yesterday - sleet, then snow! My carrot box may be started indoors.....

So glad you joined us. And thank you for taking on the carrot challenge. I think it will be a fun time for all.
Sorry for the bum weather, but that will change for you before too long.
Is this your first year gardening? Please let us know how your garden is progressing (once the snow and sleet get out of the way) and please, share pictures. We love pictures.

Carrot Week
This is our first SFG, but we are super excited about it! I am building our second and third boxes next week, and had already planned on putting in carrots, so this simplifies the seed decision process!

Re: If You CARROT all for SFG...
I'm excited, I picked up seeds for this today! I also made the frames for my boxes (okay, my boyfriend did). Now I just need to get the remainder of the Mel's mix ingredients and some more seeds.

Hi everyone! I'm new as well and plan on going out today to find some Nantes seeds so I can join in on the fun.
I built one 4x4 box last week and I'm ready to start planting! If all goes well this summer I plan on building one more box to play with.

Watch out! Your "playing" will turn into more boxes than you think! SFG is addictive! It is so easy to do, well after the initial set up. I had not gardened in years other than some containers. I started last year with ONE 4x4 box and this year I have 3 4x4 boxes and 2 2x4 boxes!

Learning how this addition works!
Hi Everyone!
Thanks for all the positive feedback. I'm not on daily as I work and have after school activities. I'm not in school but, sure feel like I am. I use to row garden until last year, when I spent $6000. on having my yard fertilized with my own manure. Seriously, we had to have are septic turned into "reagular" sewer system. Three months and 1/2 the growing season later....So trust me up to any challenge.

I'm in!
This is my first SFG, and I am in! I am curious to see what happens, I have some carrots coming up now that I am very excited about!
I am looking forward to making the comparisons because April 15 will be very LATE for carrots...I am in the panhandle of Florida and our high temps are already above 80 F....I'm concerned I planted lettuce too late, the afternoon sun is going to start baking everything! My mom has some Nantes seed that I can get from her, I think I planted Danvers. It will be interesting to compare them to everyone else's, and my earlier crop as well.
Happy Planting!

This will be a fun comparison - because so many of us have the other problem as well - April 15th is EARLY for me - I will probably have to start mine in a box inside or a protected box on the deck, since we still have 2+ feet of snow covering my carrot area.....

Oh goosegirl, I had a sudden flash of sympathy for you! This must be killing you to just be sitting there and watching everyone else! Especially since backyardbirdgardener is eating some baby greens already. Here's to a early spring for you

Thanks Boffer! I am positively CRABBY at not being able to get out and build my boxes and dig in the dirt - no garage or workshop. We had a bit of a thaw and I was able to pull out some of last year's disaster, but if I got within a foot or so of a snowbank the old plants were still solidly frozen into the ground. This, of course, was before the last snow storm that re-covered EVERYTHING and I am tired of white!

Count me in, too!
This sounds like fun -- plus I always work better with a deadline! This will give me plenty of time to get home, unpack and build my boxes. I'm looking forward to this...a LOT!!!
Carrots
Hey, I will join in. I am sort of new to this SFG and picked up my seeds today - and one of them just happens to be nantes - because I don't have a deep box for growing my carrots - so we will see how they grow. What fun!
