Re: Today's Harvest
Sure, I placed the Cayenne Pepper sauce recipe in the Canning & Preserving section since it isn't an appetizer.
Enjoy!
Enjoy!

Re: Today's Harvest
The last of the lemon cukes. (This was actually a few days ago.) I had just about changed my mind about growing these, after my huge success with the Armenians, but then I discovered that when the nights start getting cold, the Armenians don't do well, but these guys thrive. This last batch are crisp and sweet. It's almost like eating an apple. I will definitely grow them again next year.
Re: Today's Harvest
Thanks for sharing that the lemon cucumbers are good for the cool fall. When did you start them?
Re: Today's Harvest
Started them in June. They took forever. I don't think I harvested one until October. Then they took off. I got at least a dozen from just 2 vines.sanderson wrote:Thanks for sharing that the lemon cucumbers are good for the cool fall. When did you start them?

OK, I need to know, what cultivar is this?? Northern gardeners need to know!countrynaturals wrote:The last of the lemon cukes. (This was actually a few days ago.) Lemon Cucumbers sounds good, maybe worth a try, wonder if they like it hot.

Re: Today's Harvest
Mine survived the heat, but did not thrive. My burpless and Armenians produced all summer, while the lemon cukes showed wilted leaves most days until they got fully established. The didn't produce a single blossom until the middle of Sept.newbeone wrote:Lemon Cucumbers sounds good, maybe worth a try, wonder if they like it hot.

Re: Today's Harvest
Yep! I think I will do both. Probably fry a couple and make salsa with the rest. I was also thinking about making a green tomato pasta sauce, but I didn't really find any recipes that looked very appealing to my families tastes. We love vegetables, but in my home, pasta sauce has meat in it!sanderson wrote:Looks like it is fried green tomatoes or green tomato salsa time.
Anyone have a link to a green salsa recipe that they have tried and liked?

Re: Today's Harvest
I'm thinking the small ones boiled and tossed with butter, salt and fresh ground pepper.

You're a mind-reader, S. That's just what we did and they were awesome!sanderson wrote:I'm thinking the small ones boiled and tossed with butter, salt and fresh ground pepper.
Re: Today's Harvest
Katie's grandsons are visiting, so we took a tour of the Salad Bar. The boys ate radishes, kale, carrots, & sugar snap peas right out of the ground/off the plants. Tomorrow we'll have a "sprout tasting" session of cilantro, sunflowers, sugar snap peas, and Daikon radishes.
What I got today (actually three days due to rain)
Below is what I harvested this morning. Due to rain and work, I missed Friday and Saturdays harvest.
Clockwise from top left, we have Hungarian Wax Peppers, Beefsteak Tomato, 2 weird Uknown hybrid of Beefsteak and yellow pear Tomato, Serrano Chile, Dwarf Serrano Chile, Straight 8 Cucumber, Red Cayenne, Large Red Cherry Tomato. The two types of peppers in the center are Sweet Banana (top), and Jalepeno (bottom).
All of this from only 12 square feet. I have some Habanero growing, as well as lima beans, cantaloupe, radishes, Black Krim tomatoes, quite a few California Wonder, and Rainbow bell peppers, to fill out the rest of the garden.

5 Beit alpha cukes, one (slim & slight curve) Indian Dance cuke. 4 jalapeño peppers, 1 sweet banana pepper, a couple sweet bell peppers and not photographed 2 skinny baby carrots next to a big one that I missed thinning.
Gonna make cuke & onion salad!

Re: Today's Harvest
I'm just going to have to try Beit Alpha next year. Muncher is a consistent, wonderful producer here in the broiling Central Valley. But, the BA may also be a good producer for me.
