Re: Carrot Week 2012!
Susan!
Here are seven of my Nantes seedlings from last night. 16 were planted.
These are incredibly fast germinators! They will quickly outpace my Nutri-Reds that were put in a few weeks ago! I only have 2 of their 8 showing so far, and they already have reached the sprout 'true leaves' stage!

As soon as I read that, I could picture the book in my mind's eye, from my days studying Early Childhood Education. Is this it?aerinh123 wrote:Thanks guys! My son was so excited he told his teacher about the carrots. So she sent a little book home about planting carrot seeds. The boy in the book harvested a very big carrot, my son is hoping for the same outcome. I don't know about that but it will be fun to try!
Great book . Wonderful, intuitive teacher!
Look, it's celebrating its 60th anniversary! Now I have to--well, not now, but if I ever get to bed, when I get up--get to the library and re-read it!

Mine says two weeks too, but they came up in a week two months ago so it will be interesting to see how long they take this time!

I know how you feel. I tried carrots 3 times, first year was in a regular bed and someone planted over them (it's a community garden) because I was afraid to pull weeds since I didn't know what was a weed and what was a sprout so they thought it was a free spot. Second time was last year, and my attention span caused me to forget about them. Mid summer I checked and still didn't see anything very carroty. I don't know what happened there but it didn't work out. I might have ended up planting something else in its space. I can't remember.
THis year I need to try to stay focused and keep track.

How warm have your days been Kay? Ours are 70-75, nights in the 50s. My Burpee pak doesn't say (THE thing I don't like about Burpee seeds!).
I guess mine were "on the 7."

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
we have had warm days but cold at night. Everything I planted on 4th April has sprouted apart from peas which think need more time.
I went to Burpee web site and it gave me more info than the packet. It tells you how to sow, grow and harvest for each seed. to the bottom right on the item page it has a tab to click for growing info. If you plug in your zip code it shows you a little calendar planner !

i dont typically buy Burpee, I just needed Nantes and hubby picked them!

oops - I forgot something
Today I went out to the garden to see if anything had sprouted. That is when I realized - I NEVER marked the square in which I planted my Nantes carrots~ OOOPS!! I have three squares planted with Nantes carrots, but two are teamed up with radishes -- so I KNOW where those are at least!
That 4x4 square only has 4 spots I could have planted with carrots. Hmm I hope they sprout soon so I can mark where I planted them. I was planning to plant the remaining three squares as follows: 1 with another batch of carrots in week or so and 2 with burgundy beans (bush beans).
Planting after dark has its disadvantages! LOL

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
I have carrot sprouts!
Nine days to sprout this time, the ones I planted in Feb were up in seven so that's pretty good.
I'd take a pic but they're so small I don't think you'd see them!

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
We have some sprouts too! My younger son put a LOT of seeds in his box. I wanted him to be able to plant the seeds himself and he just couldn't get the idea that we only needed one seed per hole. LOL He may get the weirdest carrots if I don't convince him to thin them out.

That OK there is a weirdest carrot category so I'm planning on thinning some and leaving the rest to see what happens!

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
I looked outside this morning and we have snow. Heavy, wet and a few inches.
The carrots are in a container so I moved them to a sheltered spot and knocked the snow off. Will they be ok??
Nicola - That is the exact book that C's teacher sent home. And the copy she sent looks to be about 60 years old! LOL

I'm seeing sprouts! Most of them are radish sprouts of course, but there are a few skinny little leaves that look like carrots! It is day 19 for me, but I started seeing sprouts on Sunday morning (day 9).
Question: Does anyone know of a good resource to help identify plants before the true leaves appear?

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
My boys planted one week ago today, so I guess today's the 8th day in the ground. They both got sprouts yesterday, but I didn't get around to taking a picture until today.
You can't see anything much in my older son's box; he was careful about planting only one seed per spot, with one exception where he planted 2 to see what would happen (Look hard, there really are 2 sprouts in there!):
My younger son's box has a TON of sprouts since he didn't fully "get" the one seed per hole instructions. (This one will be very interesting to watch!):
The boys are gearing up for the fun, and they check their boxes every day when they get home from school!

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
So I got a little jealous so many had carrots sprouting so on a whim I went and checked again today What a difference a day makes! I've got some carrots coming up.
Day 10:
There aren't many there yet, and they're tiny. But they are coming up
