Nantes Carrot Varieties

Nantes varieties are usually the easiest carrots for home gardeners to grow. They produce sweet, crisp, 6-7” cylindrical carrots, with blunt tips. Nantes carrots perform better in heavier, rockier soils where other carrot types twist and fork. They’re less likely to form pithy cores when left in the field than Chantenay carrots.

‘Bolero’ (F1, 75 days, resistant to Alternaria Blight and Powdery Mildew) is a high-yielding Nantes-type carrot that stays sweet even in storage. 6-7” long, with a 1 ½” crown. Cylindrical shape.

‘Nelson’ (F1, 58 days) is another early Nantes that produces 6-7” carrots with a 1” shoulder. Sweet, uniform, deep orange color. Grows well in heavy soils.

‘Yaya’ (F1, 60 days) is similar to ‘Nelson’, but a little less sweet. Holds well in the ground—good for fall sowing.

‘Napa’ (F1, 63 days, resistant to Alternaria Blight and Powdery Mildew) produces 7-8” carrots with a 1 ½” shoulder, deep orange color, and sweet, crisp taste. Performs well even in heavy soils.

‘Touchon’ (Open Pollinated, French Heirloom, 70 days) is similar to ‘Bolero’, but grows a little larger (8”). Sweet and tasty even when small, it can be harvested at any size.

‘Parano’ (F1, 65 days) is an early Nantes type that produces beautiful, 6-7” carrots that are great fresh, cooked or juiced.

‘Baltimore’ (F1, 75 days) is similar to ‘Nelson’, but 2 weeks later.

‘White Satin’ (F1, 70 days) produces crisp, white, 8” carrots. A Nantes variety that adds a different color to the carrot rainbow.

‘Merida’ (F1, 240 days) is a storage-type Nantes variety bred for overwintering in the ground. Plant in September or October. Can be grown with no cover in Zones 6 and up. Cover with 6-12” of straw in colder zones. Sweet, 7-8” carrots with 1 ½” shoulders.

‘Nectar’ (F1, 72 days, resistant to Alternaria and Cercospora Blights) produces high yields of 8”, uniform carrots. Large, vigorous tops resist blights.

OK I have Kaleidoscopic & little fingers, bummer. Sad Maybe I pick some up next trip to the store. This sounds like fun. I already built my high hats (tall boxes) and we LOVE carrots. I use the puree to sweeten some of my baked goods and it freezes well. OK- guess we're growing even MORE carrots this year-lol cheers

Luckily, you can store any surplus of carrot seed for several years Very Happy
Maybe next year you wont have to buy carrot seed at all, allowing you to purchase something else to try!

My apologies for not including photo credit earlier. I saw the "carrots in love" photo posted on Territorial Seeds' facebook page yesterday, and they said it was from their friends at HGP (Homeless Garden Project).

Glad it brought some smiles.

It's 9"x32"x6" deep.
I'm thinking this might be my carrot box. Very Happy for Carrot Week.
I'll drill a few drain holes and it'll be ready for action.

So while at the store yesterday I couldn't resist picking up more seeds. So I grabbed these and i'm ready to go. I am so glad I found this forum. While my husband defiantly appreciates my garden, and often offers to help he doesn't always get my giddiness. He caught me talking to my seedling that are under lights last night. He just laughs now and shakes his head. He commented later that he loves to see me happy (As a married woman who know how her hubby thinks I took this opportunity to plant another the seed) and causally mentioned that the neighbor down the way has a new rooster and I hope it doesn't get too noisy. He mentioned "for eggs don't you just need hens?' I said yep and they don't crow. He agreed "wonder why they didn't just get hens?" --so by this time next year, I might have a few chickens!). Sorry I digress, I'm planting Scarlet Nantes for Carrot Week. 2nd Annual Carrot Week - Page 4 3170584802
