Re: 2nd Annual Carrot Week
Some of you may recall from my earlier “Carrot Week” posts that after enthusiastically joining the challenge this newbie discovered I had bought old seed!
Despite “old seed” and that I have never tried to grow carrots, admin reassured me my seeds would be okay, urging me to, “Do It, Do It, Do It!”
Regrettably worry returned after I read some scary posts about problems handling those tiny carrot seeds. So I opened a package to see for myself.
Now my usual confidence is waning again.
But wait! Just a few days ago I made up another batch of soil cubes/blocks to start more veggies indoors. Turns out there were extras, 15 to be exact. Only one short of a full square!
Hmmmm, why not do a germination test while there’s still plenty of time before the contest kick-off?
After all, I already started some leaf lettuce and those are tiny seeds, too! I’ll just use the same approach and the same tools (Paper towel, Tweezers, Magnifier, and a not too long thin pointy ended stick).
A handy container of moist vermiculite, and a teaspoon.
Remember to mist the seeds well after planting.
Might as well get a bit more practice labeling cubes/blocks with those cuts of decorator blinds and that new white grease pencil/china marker.
So after assembling everything needed on my makeshift potting bench I decided “I can do this, and if it works I’ll be ready for the competition!”
Less than an hour later my “old seed” Nantes Carrot cubes/blocks were completed.
So I covered them with a humidity dome and moved them to my sprouting shelf!
My carrot experiment has begun!
I’ll post my results in about a week, and if they’re not acceptable I’ll run and find this year's seeds.

Nice experiment Windsor.Parker
Remember that if your soil temperature is between 68 and 86 degrees, you can expect germination in 6 or 7 days, but if the soil temp is 50 to 59 degrees, it will take 10 to 17 days.
Usually, carrots don't like to be transplanted, but using soil blocks, I wonder if the roots would be undisturbed during transplant to the SFG. Just curious.
Anxiously awaiting your results.

My basement temp stays c. 68-70 deg. F. But the sprouting shelf is in my boiler room, which stays much warmer (73-83 deg. F).
I began using a soil thermometer only recently, and didn't think to get a reading on the blocks. I'll do it right away.
This pic shows the block temp c. 82 deg. F, which is the same as the air temp.
Didn't know about the transplant issue, and now of course I'm curious too! I'll keep you posted, and thanks again.

Of course I'm still holding two squares in my new carrot box for carrot week, NR. Think I'll try 16 direct-seeded into MM, and 16 started in cubes at the same time. ...?nKedrOoStEr wrote:

Re: 2nd annual Carrot Contest
Have a question: for the contest do you need to plant them in the MM? See we are going to be moving sometime this year and had to take out our gardens to get grass growing again, we live in military housing. So my 4 year old want to plant the garden again and I was thinking about letting him plant in some pot with just gardening soil. Then I saw this contest. Mentioned it to him and he really wants to join in but was not sure if we could. Let me know so I can plan, thanks!!!

You can plant them in anything you want, I'm sure. MM isn't a requirement.

Cool!
@ Luci...c'mon! You can do it! Get some seeds and deep pot! Let it be your first garden! You just might win!
@ Gwennifer - love the interlocked carrots. Too funny! It's worth it not to thin just to see what wackyness develops, LOL. I had lots of clay until last week.
Q: How do you harvest a 19.2" carrot? Dig it out? Can you imagine pulling it? It would keep coming, and coming, and let loose, putting you on your tail! It would be like reeling in a bass.
Q: With the wacky weather are all of you snow bound folks still in freezing weather?

Re: 2nd Annual Carrot Week
If anyone gets an ultra-long carrot they'll probably have to work the soil loose all around it. I tried pulling up a lonnnng parsnip and it broke in half. I had to dig out the other half with a dandelion weeder.

my parsnips haul last April after a winter's sleep. Verrrry tasty after the cold.
Which reminds me, I have to go pull out the ones that overwintered.

Growing Turnips and Parsnips
quiltbea, I am intrigued with your turnips. Can you tell us how you grew them? What size height and depth container? Did you use MM? When did you plant and harvest them?

Re: 2nd Annual Carrot Week
I didn't want to hijack the thread, just wanted to mention using something like a dandelion weeder to get out long carrots, like I do my parsnips.
mijego, to answer your question......The photo above is of parsnips, not turnips. They are similar in taste to carrots, but larger, grow deeper and are sweeter, especially after a couple of fall frosts. You can even leave them in to overwinter, as I do here in Maine, and they will be fine in March or April. My boxes are all 12" deep and I don't have bottoms on them so they can send roots down a lot deeper. Parsnips need lots of depth so I wouldn't plant them in anything less than 12" deep.

I will give it a try....
IF my ADD allows and I don't forget about the contest all together!
I like the Nantes Coreless. They were pretty and sweet. We had an awefully hot summer and they did not get bitter tasting from all the heat and drought but the others that I planted were just BAD!

No reason you can't plant some now, just make sure you save a square for 4-15 and mark it well!
