Re: 2nd Annual Carrot Week
Like kbb, Western Oregonians are advised to plant carrot seeds in May. Last year, however, I joined in the April 15 fun and planted the carrot seeds in a repurposed vintage washing machine tub filled with MM. They grew just fine, and were of a size for grandkids to pull and devour them all in mid-June! This year, I'm planting in a black over-sized pot purchased from a vendor at the farmers' market.

I will join in the fun and will buy some Nantes seeds today. I guess I will boot one of the Broccoli squares!

This is a double post, but I thought it would be valuable on this thread.

Thanks Camp! That is a great website...I had no idea so many different varieties of carrots existed!

Re: 2nd Annual Carrot Week
Well, I'm new to the site and have been browsing the forums when I ran across this. I confess, I read it from start to finish, had some giggles along the way, and meanwhile was trying to find a website that would tell me what kind of carrot seeds I have in my possession already. Turns out, thanks to Camp, I was able to determine that my seeds are of the Imperator variety (Tendersweet).
Guess I'm going to look for some seeds soon, and hope that they exist locally since there's absolutely NO time for me to get some by mail-order...and my boys would LOVE to participate in a contest! Who cares if we're newbies to gardening? It'll be a fun way for the boys to get even more involved in the growing season!
So here's hoping I find some appropriate seeds!

Re: 2nd Annual Carrot Week
I planted some in with my tomatoes that I transplanted about a week ago and I just noticed today that some of them are sprouting, but I'll be happy to plant more (yummy!) during carrot week. So there is a week for planting... is there a week I need to put on the calendar for when we have to pull them up?
I've got the Scarlet Nantes variety from Burpee.. on the seed tape for my own ease in planting lol. 300 seeds on 22.5ft on environmentally friendly tape that dissolves after it's planted.

CarolinaGirl - in the upper or lower right of this page, you'll see the page numbers to page through the post...if you go back to page 1, you'll see Rooster's original post which states that you plant anytime between the 12th and the 18th of April.. I don't know about harvest - it will probably be a date range as well...

Re: 2nd Annual Carrot Week
For late season (May) planters, would it make sense to start your carrots in a peat pot for the deadline, and cut out the bottom of the pot when you transplant them into the ground? In 2 weeks they will be really tiny blades.
My DD weeded my carrot seedlings recently, when they were just blades, then replanted them when she realized they were carrots, not grass! They are doing just fine now, a few inches tall, sporting true leaves.
I woke up this morning with "MUST GET NANTES SEEDS!!!"

The PARTIAL list of nantes, for those who need it (on pg 6):

I believe the source is this: http://www.grow-it-organically.com/carrot-varieties.html

Re: 2nd Annual Carrot Week
I found this list too (from http://carrotmuseum.co.uk/atoz.html - just the Nantes are given, some are repeat)
Barwon a long Nantes type. Averages 20cm long, tops medium tall and strongly tolerant to alternaria, also other leaf blights. Deep orange inside and out, bolt tolerant, good for winter cultivation.
Bolero - Commercial market garden Nantes type. Smooth, long, slightly tapered roots. High yields, excellent colour. Tolerant to Alternaria blight, powdery mildew. Good cavity spot tolerance.
Crusader Nantes type. Smooth skins, good colour, high yields. Good uniformity. Harvest for Summer, Autumn, late spring.
Hipak Nantes Berlicum type, slightly tapered, long root, good all rounder. Good colour and taste.
Magno bred from Nantes and Berlicum. Mid season carrot, excellent-coloured cylindrical roots, strong against breakage and cavity spot.
Manchester Table Nantes type carrot with sweet crisp deep orange, uniformly long cylindrical root, having blunt end with small core..
Nantes Succulent cigar-shaped, bright orange, French variety. Not seen in the market much as they are too brittle for machine harvesting.
Nelson a nantes/imperator type grows to over 7" and is sweet and crunchy.
Scarlet Nantes 6" cylindrical and blunt, grows to 6" and is sweet crisp juicy and uniform.
Touchon Rare old French Nantes type with roots growing 15-17 cm long deep orange colour and little core. Very sweet and juicy.
Uchon A Nantes type, grows to 8 inches, blunt with a sweet and mild flavour; bright orange centre.
Some say "nantes type" or are a hybrid, and may not meet the criteria.
I also saw reference the a Nantes variety of "mokum" but have not found any information on it.

Re: 2nd Annual Carrot Week
My Carrot Week square is planted
We have had unusually warm (i.e. not actually freezing) weather with drizzle and fog but today is lovely and sunny so I prepped a square and put in some Nantes 2 seed.
Last year my carrot week carrots didn't really do any better than the ones sown at the normal time but I think that was because although they germinated fine we had a very cold spell and they too a while to get going again. It will be interesting to see if these do any better.

No kidding! It's the scurry to find them. WalFart only had scarlets. I already have nutri-reds (not nantes) so the search begins!
What are the dates for planting?

Carrot week started yesterday in my son's gardens. He had some left over bits of wood and I convinced him to make 2 top hats.
