Littlejo, my Walmart carries SEEDS OF CHANGE organic seeds. (I was really suprised at this) They also are carrying Burpee and I picked up a pack of Nantes style Heirloom carrots for less than $1

Re: 2nd Annual Carrot Week
I start seeds in soil blocks to eliminate root disturbance so I think this year I'll try starting some carrot seeds in a few blocks so I can just bring them outdoors when the time is right and get a head start. It usually takes a durn long time for carrots in my garden otherwise.

I've been playing with using 2 inch diameter plastic waste water pipe as 4 inch high toilet roll tubes for a couple of years because it is almost ever lasting & can be sterilized easily .
I made a plunger to push up from the bottom so I can take out a rooted plant and plug of soil. Its worked well , had the vast majority of plants survive & thrive.
It just crossed my mind that instead of using four inch long tubes I could play with eight inch ones or longer , stand them up in a tub/bucket etc. when filled, let them settle after watering and sow the seeds the next day .
Then devise a simple hollow plunger that would allow the plant and plug to be injected down into a prepared hole , pushed down from the top of the tube instead of the current one which is used from the bottom of the tube.
Would that scenario help out you short seasom growers to get decent sized root crops ready for planting out?

Re: 2nd Annual Carrot Week
I found some Mezza Lunga Nantese carrot seed "The Italian Choice" by Ferry-Morse yesterday at Home Depot/Lowes. Are these Nantes carrot seeds or do they just have a similar name to Nantes.
I also purchased Scarlet Nantes so I am still good to go for carrot week.

I have never had any luck planting carrots that late but I'm on the gulf coast. Anyone else have any luck down this far. I will plant some anyway just to keep up with the contest.

Re: 2nd Annual Carrot Week
You may have to put maybe some burlap on the damp soil to get the mm cooled down some in order for the carrots to germinate. I think they will grow in the heat, if you can get them to come up.
If we don't get some winter soon, it will be in the 90's in April.(It was 76 yesterday)

That's entirely too funny. I had already bought carrot seeds for the year, but once there was a specified type for the contest, I went back out to get some Nantes and out of the five or six different brands available, I picked these. One, because they were the only one specifying Organic and two, because they had the most attractive (dare I say pretty) packaging. I'll take the watercolor look over a glossy print any day.

Re: 2nd Annual Carrot Week
I ordered Touchon carrots, will get here before the start date!
Just have to say to you'all that are trying the'Little Fingers' carrots. I grew them last yr. and left them in the ground a couple months longer than supposed to, They were so sweet and crisp, even tho it was in the 90's.

Re: 2nd Annual Carrot Week
Last year for the Great Carrot Grow Out, we tried two varieties of Nantes: YaYa and Scarlet Nantes Coreless. Eight-year-old grandchildren devoured the Scarlet Nantes in a Bugs Bunny frenzy. YaYa didn't get eaten until the end of the visit. This year we'll be planting Nantes Fancy (can't pass up a name like that) and Atomic Red (with elevated lycopene content). Will invite grandkids back to pick the winner. Nonna

Mine should be in the mailbox on Monday! I have Danvers, Atomic Red, Cosmic Purple (LOVE these), but I had to order more Nantes for Carrot Week because my Seed Cat seems to have taken off with the partial pack from last year! One of these days I will get a pic of him with a seed packet in his mouth
