What happened to Too Tall Tomatoes?
Anyone ever hear from Too Tall Tomatoes? He worked so hard on his compost, and was all geared up for some TALL tomatoes, was looking forward to hearing his progress...

LOL, I recently bought for $0.25 a 1966 copy of this book! It's charming to read. At the time, it was compiled letters from gardeners across the country, with photos. And those B&W pics are fun. Lots of long, long rows and overalls!

Bend Garden Tour
Yesterday, I went on an OSU (Oregon State University) Extension garden tour in my new hometown. The day was gorgeous (if hot), and it was a fantastic opportunity to get the lay of the land and explore the city!
The Master Gardeners all seemed familiar with SFG, and one garden actually had two regulation SFG beds and the owners even displayed a copy of ANSFG in their greenhouse. I learned that there is an SFG demonstration garden in Redmond, 20+ miles away.
As if I weren't already excited enough, I stopped by a different garden center on the way home and stumbled upon... yet another type of compost, bark fines with cow manure. Yay!

Hello all,
I've missed you! The fair is over (thank goodness) and the kids did well. 6th place photography, 3rd place rockets, Honorable mention for scrapbooking and 2nd for canning/freezing! Madison is already planning next years projects.
As for my garden and these heat waves - I've gotten one picking of beans, 6 cucumbers () and about 3 dozen tomatoes. Not a good year for us at all but I'm hoping for a better fall crop.
I'll be back in full force August 1st.
See you then,
Kim

Re: Senseless Banter...
Question: about last week I noticed these things: "Thumbs Up Thumbs Up" in low left-corner of people's posts, and I've been happily going around Repping people.
Today I see
some people have this Twice but the two aren't connected. So you can give 1 or 2. Does this lead to something else?

And on another note....
Yesterday evening, after a dinner made mostly from what was pulled from the SFGarden, PapaVino and I were sitting on the deck, admiring the blue sky behind Mt. St. Helens, and Mt. Adams, and watching a couple of turkey vultures circuling around the valley below us. Then a third large bird joined them. The new bird had wings more blunt than the vultures.....and a white head AND a white tail. It was a bald eagle. The eagle flew with the vultures for quite a time, leading PapaVino to quip: "Obviously, a mixed marriage." Have you ever snorted wine through your nose?

Olympians are not born that way. It's all in how they are raised...
Most know it's incredibly hard to become an Olympian. But many of us, jazzed up by watching the Games on TV, still dream we could do it, if only…
So what Grit, determination, money, & sacrifice does it take to be an Elite athlete:
3+ (60-minute) Training sessions daily, starting before 0600 or day break, before dawn, & not stopping when it's dusk.
Swimmers like Ryan Lochte eat many! 1000's calories daily, to make up those lost during training; before it pays off: http://www.nbcolympics.com/news-blogs/blog=olympic-talk/post/lochte-executes-on-well-thought-out-olympic-plan.html?cid=rss&dst=nbcsp|widget|superwidget&__source=nbcsp|widget|superwidget
100 chin-Ups executed by gymnast Shawn Johnson, during conditioning sessions when she was in 8th. grade.
4-8 years in advance that Olympic hopefuls schedule their workouts. Do you know what you are doing next week?
35 weekly hours that British triathlete Jonny Brownlee works out --- rain or shine.
That's an average of 8 hours swimming, 10 hours running, 17 hours biking, plus hitting the gym for weight training.
world record holder Janet Evans swam TEN MILES per day, 6 days a week in her bid
to return to competitive swimming after a 16-year hiatus. That's 330 lengths of an Olympic size-pool every day.
Parents of athletes have to wait sometimes a year, to travel from a communist-country, like Maria Sharapova's mom waiting for a visa to travel from Russia to the USA to see her then-seven-year old daughter who was already training in Florida.
$25,000 that a Gold winner medal on Team USA receives.
Silver earns $15,000 and bronze nets $10,000. And, if you don't win or get sponsorship? Zero.
The US government does not support athletes financially or with health insurance,
unlike some other countries.
The USA Track & Field Foundation guesses less than 50% of competitors ranked in the top 10 in their event, earn over $15,000 a year from sports.
Are you prepared to have surgery at least once for a sports-related injury?
It's a wonder people keep doing it: because they have DREAMS & the where-with-all to make them come true...

Re: Senseless Banter...
I think yes on the Olympics Rooster! Amazing facts you shared LittleGardner, thank you for sharing those! What a sacrifice these olympians make to train, compete and win! My 24 yr. old son and I were watching the Olympics Saturday night. We were watching the gymnasts and one especially impressed me, John Orozco. His family sacrificed so much to get him his training, refinancing their home five times, driving to his performances, etc. He overheard his parents talking about bills one time and were having financial problems. He went out and got a job and with his first paycheck he gave it to his parents to help them make the house payment!
He is such a strong and talented athlete. His performance was amazing! There is a story about him on this site. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/olympics/2012/07/29/john-orozco-us-mens-gymnastics-2012-olympics/index.html
I told my son I always felt I was a little above average in PE in school. It was one of my favorite subjects! I could outrun guys my age. I loved playing football, baseball, basketball, etc. I could not throw very far but could run and catch good. I didn't have much experience in gymnastics and was not very good at it. When my older boys were about my height I would race them. Boy this is making me feel old. It seems like a lifetime ago! I had to laugh at the difference between the olympians and my abilities then but they are still good memories. I never felt I had to be an olympian. I would so love to have that amount of energy again!

Oh that is priceless! No, no wine but other liquids! Soda kinda burns! Is PapaVino always so quick with the jokes? That would have been so fun to watch those birds! Did your area get hit from Mt. St. Helens when it erupted? I lived in Southern California at the time and we got some ash clear down to the Los Angeles area!

wow, sounds like we were a bit opposite, as any ball-chasing of any sort I found too boring. Also lacked endurance, because I never learnt to PACE myself, & to this day I don't know how (share that in a different thread); so couldn't do the marathons, but was a dependable little sprinter, and skiing-downhill (incldg. building a little ski-jump). Yes I liked flying, and too I fared well in gymnastics, my favorite was the unevens. - Well, fast forward 3 decades, and off we went for Homeschool PE to none else but the Ice Arena. Really, what else would you expect, from someone faring better in the cold, & loving speed, still has the flexibility & strength of a gymnast - like right in the middle of a group-lesson, I got bored oh but lookie at those cones the coaches use to separate each class. I think I'll just JUMP right over them, & that's just what I did LOLOLOL 'til my daughter said "No, I've never seen that nut before; my mom is not that crazy, yet. Just give her time" (lol) - We should have a different thread, as then I could tell you the various one-liners I exchanged with my coach during lessons. You'd not be able to Stop laughing, as yesTriciasgarden wrote:

our favorite joke became "What! No triple axels today AGAIN? How do you expect to get to, or medal in the Olympics at this rate" LOLOLOL
