You can get a decent juicer for much cheaper. Like boffer said, the Hamilton beach is not bad. Will do much better than a blender and run around $70 or less.
I have never done much with the pulp but there are all kinds of recipes out there for using it up. I usually end up giving it to the chickens and ducks.

Try shopping some yard sales or church sales. Ive seen them for $3-$5. I got my

my Jack LaLanne for $10. A little dirty and probably used only once or twice but I

felt like I got a real bargain.

I have a vitamix blender and love it for making smoothies it is the vita prep 3000 which is a heavy duty bartenders friend. Same as the other vitamixes but has a little stronger and faster motor than some, also a better warranty. Think it was a little over $400 about 3-4 years ago. My juicer is a Champion which is a good one too. Juicing is fine at special times but I think blending delivers a more well rounded and complete food and is easier to do and easier to clean up after at least with my equipment setup. I will never be rich in fact I struggle to remain average but have decided quality products are a far better value and more satisfying than continually struggling with then frequently replacing the maddening bargain junk. Wish I would have started thinking that way long ago and adjusting priorities accordingly. Smoothies seem more vogue currently but both juicing and blending definitely have valuable yet slightly different appeal.

Carrot, apple & pineapple is my favorite blend. We have been juicing for 16 years and have tried quite a few combination's during that time span. Celery, as much as I like it raw, is just waaaaay too overpowering [for me] in juice.

Our Champion juicer has never missed a beat in that time frame (knock on my forehead 3x). As much as I do enjoy a good smoothie and appreciate the easier clean up of a blender, I believe juice is easier for the body to assimilate and digest though Montel may disagree Wink

Have you guys seen the documentary, "Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead"? A guy named Joe Cross made it and it's really interesting. I bought a juicer at Christmas time and we've enjoyed making juice, although my 10-year-old won't drink it if it's green because he says it smells like lawn clippings. Smile It's pretty effort-intensive, but I think the nutrition is worth it. My chickens won't touch the pulp either! I compost it since my worms have too much food already.

Years ago my mom bought me a smoothie maker. a Back to Basics Smoothie Chill, and I love it.

My name is boffer, and I'm a juicer. - Page 3 35947928-200x200-0-0

It's not a high end machine but it's held up to quite a bit of use. It's difficult to clean, though. What I love is that I fill it with about 1/3 liquid (bananas, yogurt, juice, that kind of stuff) and then fill it up to about 2/3 with frozen fruit. It makes the tastiest drinks! I just throw in whatever fruit I have in the freezer, which varies from strawberries to blueberries, watermelon to any of the varieties of melon I found at the Farmer's Market, and voila! A delicious cold treat that my sons consider to be dessert.

I'm sure you could make the same kind of thing with any blender that can handle frozen fruit, but the spout at the bottom makes it easy to dispense.

My wife uses the pulp left over from juicing pineapples to make a wonderful sorbet desert. We usually discard all other pulp from juicing though she will occasionally use carrot pulp to use in muffins.

I got a Vitamix off CraigsList for $100 a couple years ago. It was brand new, but was an older model; the old all metal one. Think the guy used to be a dealer, cause he had 4 of them, and did a demo of it when I picked it up. Wink

I had wanted one for years, more even than a KitchenAid mixer. So when I found it that cheap, I grabbed it. I never could make myself spend $400 on a kitchen appliance, but $100 pretty much is the cost of two cheapo only-lasts-a-year type blenders.

As a diabetic, I don't do juice as it concentrates the sugars and discards the fiber which slows down the rise of blood glucose. So I do think smoothies are superior because you don't lose the fiber in the drink.

But smoothies are not the primary use of the Vitamix.

The Vitamix is WAY easier to use than an ice cream maker, just throw in frozen fruit and heavy cream and near-instant very low-sugar ice cream.

It also does nut butters, which means I don't have to settle for just almond and cashew from the store, but can make brazil, pistachio and hazelnut butters.

Really, the Vitamix ROCKS.

Still sorta want a KitchenAid mixer though. I'll have to keep an eye on CraigsList. Wink

I have a VERY close connection with KA... Go to their Kitchenaid Experience website and locate the store number. Call and ask if they have any refurbished units. Same warranty as a new one and waaaay less the cost. That's all we buy and they have performed flawlessly for years. Hope this helps?

We love the carrot apple juice, too. I like to add parsley and even spinach, and of course beets! However, I've become more of a smoothie-er. I've found that I can add two huge handfuls of spinach to my blueberry morning smoothie (and the kids can't even tell). With smoothies, you get the fiber, too.

My name is boffer, and I'm a juicer. - Page 3 Empty Your opinion on juicing your home-grown veggies

Post  Hardcoir 3/18/2013, 2:24 pm

I crave green juice in our Nutribullet. There is nothing better than homemade greens juiced with Bunny Luv organic carrots and some flax and chia seeds with a little coconut water to boot. I can drink 5 of these a day and still want more.

Here's my question. Certain relatives that will remain nameless give me the business and tell me that I am wasting such beautiful vegetables. I don't get her point.

Does it matter if you use the vegetables for juicing rather than use them in some sort of food dish? I believe that once it goes down your mouth to your stomach, it isn't going to look any different to the outside world.

Am I right or wrong here? Should it matter? Am I according to her, "Wasting my beautiful produce?" She believes I should juice only the organic stuff from Trader Joe's or Whole Paycheck or the local organic place that makes Whole Paycheck look like the dollar store.

Using the search feature please see multiple back threads about the juicing subject.

I think it's a personal preference. Some foods are more nutritious when cooked, some folks like the texture of their vegetables. Basically to each their own. Sounds like she is just trying to harass you.

Regarding the nutrition aspect check out this link.

Post  jazzycat 3/18/2013, 9:25 pm

My favorite juice is carrot, apple, beet, ginger. YUMSTERS! And sometimes I throw in some kale or spinach or something green and leafy.

I have an omega vert, but I wish I had gotten the omega nutrition center. You can do a LOT more with it (like making nut butters/milks and frozen ice creams/fruits). Plus it just seems to work better. And they're cheaper. C'est la vie.

I think the reason they recommend masticating juicers over centrifugal ones is the speed at which they rotate. Centrifugal juicers go a lot faster and that kills a lot of the enzymes and good stuff in the veggies. The main reason for juicing is to get more vitamins and minerals and enzymes and other good things the plants have. Our food today is so depleted, there are a lot of people out there walking around who are malnourished, and they don't even know it. There is so much illness today that was practically nonexistent 100 years ago. The food supply is toxic. It's killing us. So juicing is a way to kick start your immune system and give your body super-dense nutrition. Some juicers are better at giving you more of that nutrition.

The Norwalk juicer is the one they use at the Gerson Institute where they treat cancer patients. It is the Rolls Royce of juicers. It's very expensive though. I think the best gauge is, get the best quality one you can afford that you'll actually use. If you aren't using it, it doesn't matter how much it cost. Wink

I loved that movie, "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead." I've watched it several times and recommended it to people who ended up juicing after they watched it. Smile

All these juicers! I use my juicer at least once a day and my vitamix also once or twice a day. Been juicing a long time but started with the green smoothies a month ago and feel tremendously more healthy. I normally do carrots with celery and/or cucumber and an inch of ginger. Usually just put fruit into the blender as the concentrated sugar gets me.

I just picked up a Breville Juice Fountain Plus juicer.  At Canadian Tire it sells for $229 and is on sale for $199 plus 13% sales tax.  At Amazon Canada the regular price is $199 Cdn and now on sale for $150 Cdn plus sales tax. However, I got mine from someone on Ottawa Kijiji. I got the juicer plus a Joe Cross Juice Diet book (value $20) all for $100 Cdn and no sales tax. The machine was only used 4 times and looks brand new. Put this together with our wonderful Vitamix machine (smoothies, soups) and we are going to need a lot more veggies growing in the SFG.

TD,

Juicers are great, as long as one doesn't use too many high-carb veggies.

Whoa!!! Excellent score, TD!!! cheers I have the Breville compact juicer. I covet the one you got. Yours is so much better! I like to do a reboot at least once a month and I'm due for one now. Let me know if you want to do one together. I normally do a three-day and start on Friday. Love me a good reboot! It's kept my weight down to almost normal this winter, where as I usually gain too much winter weight.

Joe has a website with a support forum. I did a 5 day reboot with them and it was great.

We may a!ready gave an SFG juice recipe thread but if not we could start one. What a Face

Here is one

https://squarefoot.forumotion.com/t8872-my-name-is-boffer-and-i-m-a-juicer?highlight=I+m+a+juicer

and there are others. This is just one of the ones I remembered.

I just did a search and read a couple of juicing  threads.

The day after we bought the used Breville juicer, a friend told us she has a juicer we could have received from her. She is elderly so I volunteered to sell it for her on Kijij.  I just found out that it is a Champion which I believe is a masticating juicer.  That would be better than the Breville centrifugal juicer.

CC I'll look into that 3 day reboot.  Did you encounter any negatives during the reboot?

Resurrection!
Bringing back an old thread which may be of interest to some. There are more juicing threads around here if you do some digging.
