Re: Fall Contest - Show us your Biggest Brassica, Broccoli!
I share your joy! I grew broccs for the first time last year. When I finally found the first head I just stood there in awe, for who knows how long. Until I felt a little silly. Then went back and rolled back the little leaves to peak at it again.

With it being cool and rainy here in the desert the past couple weeks I've been pretty negligent watering but now that I see my first broccoli head ever I will go back to being the good poppa that I was to my tomatoes (still got a few of those on several plants that I'm hoping ripen).

Re: Fall Contest - Show us your Biggest Brassica, Broccoli!
Well, I'm out of the contest! I went to check my gardens this morning & the broccoli has bolted!!! Arrrgghh! Pretty yellow flowers, but certainly not what I wanted to see. It has been pretty warm here lately. Lesson learned, I'll have to watch them more carefully next time I try them. (which I could have done if it wasn't dark when I get off work!) I could have had a couple of meals out of them probably, if I'd caught them right as they started bolting.
I guess broccoli is going to be hard to grow here where we have warmer weather, even in fall/winter. But I got such a kick out of seeing them growing that I'll probably give it another go. I still have one cauliflower plant going, with a small head, that hasn't bolted yet. We'll see.
Good luck to everyone else with your brassica!

I found my flowers to be pretty tasty. Try them before you pitch them. I ate them raw.

Really, janezee? I wonder if they'd be good in a lettuce salad? I'm sure they'd be pretty.
I'll have to try them! Thanks!

Ha ha. I've never tried sunsugars (tomatoes, right?). But I love the little yellow pear tomatoes - lots of them never made it to my house!

Wow, as prolific & delish as the yellow pears are, I guess I will definitely have to try the sunsugars. I kinda think of the yellow pears as being "on steroids!" They did better than any other tomatoes in my last row garden, which was pretty much ruined by extremely hot weather and stink bugs!

Re: Fall Contest - Show us your Biggest Brassica, Broccoli!
It is December 31st. Today is the last day for anybody who has been holding out measuring their broccoli for today's Biggest Brassica deadline. I have a feeling we are fresh out of contestants for this Fall 2011 contest. Or are we? Thanks to everyone for participating.

Alas, I think I planted too late. But I've been out of town for over a week and won't be back until Monday - maybe a couple heads miraculously appeared. Even if they did though, they won't be big enough to win.

Re: Fall Contest - Show us your Biggest Brassica, Broccoli!
Just pulled my first broccoli floret from the garden today and my wife said "This is the best broccoli I've ever tasted!"
Measured it at just over 4" and could have let it keep going but .. it was too awesome! Best broccoli after-taste too.
