Golden Beets
I see a lot of comments regarding some people not liking beets because of their earthy taste. While I enjoy the taste of them, I also like to experiment with new varieties of vegetables. This fall I tried a new variety, the Golden Beet. What a difference! It not only does not have the earthy taste of the red beets, but it actually has a sweet taste.
If you want a real treat, bake them! This can also be done with red beets, but the golden beets are extortionary when roasted. Simply cut the tops and roots off of the beets, wash them with a vegetable brush, place them in a baking dish so that the beets do not touch each other, then bake at 350ºF for an hour to hour and a half. Let them cool to touch, and peel the beets. They are delicious either warm or cold.
These are the ones I grew this year: https://www.rareseeds.com/golden-beet

Re: Golden Beets
I planted these and had the same experience, OG. I really love them, they are a game changer!

Fortunately, I did not experience that with the seeds I planted. As with all beet seeds, I soaked them over night in warm water with a couple drops of EM-1 and sitting on a seedling heat mat. I would estimate the germination rate at 90% to 95% for these seeds.

Thank you for sharing. I'm growing Bull's Blood again this fall. I found it less nauseating than Detroit Dark Red, the only other variety I tried. You can tell I'm not much of a beet fan unless they are pickled and on a salad. If I'm successful, maybe I will try the golden beet for roasting.

It is a plant probiotic. Check out this thread:

Re: Golden Beets
I picked all my beets this morning except one (wasn’t ready). They are very easy to grow, and with good germination in my experience. I did not grow them last year, ran out of room. This year, I did them in a container on the south side of my house and they did great!
I like them pickled the most, so need to find a great recipe for that.

Re: Golden Beets
These have become my favorite for eating boiled or roasted, as they have a sweeter taste without the earthy tone that red beets have. But, for pickling, I prefer the I prefer the Bulls Blood Beet.

Re: Golden Beets
I have only had these once, and I really forget what they taste like! Maybe I will try some boiled first, or roasted. I grew these in a container, so I don’t have a ton of them. I’m going to replace them with lettuce, and maybe some bunching onions.OhioGardener wrote:These have become my favorite for eating boiled or roasted, as they have a sweeter taste without the earthy tone that red beets have.
