The biggest threat to my seedlings Dirt10

She loves to pull plants off the table, dig her little fingers into the dirt, and shove everything into her little face. She's got 20 toys she could care less about, but put a plant in front of her, and it is the best thing in the world (to destroy)

lol! she is SOOOO CUTE>>

The biggest threat to my plants is CHEWY
He likes peas and when he picks them he gets them in his teeth and then just walks away with the plant being ripped off of the trellis.
He also digs up many things I have already planted, like the black berries. He also developed a liking for carrots last year and just started digging them up himself (at first we blamed it on the deer, but then we found the real culprit)

Luckily, my dog could care less about any of my plants. Once, she tried to jump over the garden, and didn't quite make it, so now she goes around. It's the kids that are the real threat. My oldest tries to "help", but that usually involves walking in the garden, over watering my plants, picking green tomatoes, trying to carry pots and dropping them all over, and swimming in the mel's mix.

Every kiddie need to eat at least a pound of muck Wink

So getting her started early is a fairly good way of getting it in her so she can develop the antibodies need to fight infections in her later life.

If your using horse muck based manures & composts may I suggest that you get her a tetanus injection as it is one of the most common sources of tetanus you can get.

Our poch took out a whole bed of 30 carrots or more last year ..We caught him as he waschomping the last few .. This year with the extra high raised beds perhaps we'll get a few instead.

So far she has only eaten seed starting mix. That's sterilized, right?

Tetanus is actually contracted through the skin, however most children are immunized in the first year of life against DPT (diptheria, pertussis, tetanus)

When my oldest was less than two she thought that pretty green thing on the window sill looked yummy. Thankfully it wasn't poisoness but the sight of that green poop wasn't pretty either. affraid

I have one of those threats too! He's 16 months old. I went back and forth about whether I should even bother trying to start seeds on my own this year with such a viable threat on the loose. In the end I decided I couldn't afford to lose a whole season of learning experience. I knew I wouldn't be able to pull off a light system (nowhere to put it he wouldn't eventually have access to), so I had to settle for a sunny window out of his reach. Unfortunately, it's out of my reach too! One of my bar stools has had to be re-located so that I can climb up several times a day to check on the babies and rotate them. It's not ideal, but he hasn't been able to destroy them.

I did start them on a heat mat first on a table in my bedroom. I had to be extra vigilant those few days I was waiting for everything to sprout so I could get them out of there and up into safety. It was stressful! I started some flowers later and he managed to destroy two of those before I got them transferred.

Luckily for babies/toddlers, they are so stinkin' cute!
