Hello from west central Texas
Just thought I'd re-introduce myself as we are starting all over again. I'm an older woman living as a hermit on the edge of a small town in zone 8a -- west central Texas. Have enjoyed gardening most of my life and have Mel's first book which is well used. I just moved to a place with very poor "soil" so am using his new method of raised gardens for the first time. Already have asparagus planted in a 4X6' bed, and two other beds 4 X 7' ready for planting. It's been extra cold here, so the winter veggies are just now germinating after being planted for 3 weeks. Am now working on a 12 X 2' trellis bed for vining plants. I think that is all I will do this year, and see what kind of harvest I get and determine if another couple of beds will be necessary later on. The problem in this climate is we really can't sow successively as Mel suggests as the winter crops are still producing when the summer crops need to be planted.
