Hi!! I'm in West Texas half way between Lubbock and Abilene. I'm new to gardening. Well, pritty much. We tried a small garden a few years ago but something happened and the whole garden died.It was coming along great and we were beginning to harvest then we think some bugs ate the roots. Don't know for sure. We worked SO hard on it too. So we took a year off and decided we would make some raised beds then I came across the book Square Foot Gardening and thought it looks neat. So we are anxious to get started on building our beds and getting our garden planted.

Howdy Mommix:

If I could venture a guess I would think that if your roots were eaten by a bug it was probably the grub worm. These are white and love plant roots. Great fishing bait but very destructive in the garden. If you have brown patches in your lawn when the rest of the grass is nice and green then the usual suspect is the grub worm happily eating the roots of the grass. One advantage of the raised bed gardens as described in Mel's book, "ALL NEW Square Foot Gardening is being able to easily control the buggers. When you find one while working your mix pick them out and add them to your fish bait bucket. The weed barrier usually does blocks them from entering from the ground.
