Hello all,

This is my second year to have a square foot garden. Last year wasn't too successful because we had a very dry summer, and I had trouble keeping the boxes moist enough. In addition to no rain, we also had a varmint control problem. Any time my tomatoes, eggplants or sugar baby watermelons got close to being ready to harvest they would disappear or get nibbled on. I finally threw up my hands and walked away.

This year despite a late start my interest in SFGing has been renewed. This year I mulched the beds with about 1" of pine bark mulch, and I set the beds on the ground (previously they were suspended about 6 inches off the ground). We've had a dry spring, but so far my watering has been at a minimum. My husband and I also put an electric fence around the garden, and so far it's kept the critters at bay.

I've come to the forum to seek advice on our next SFG project - chickens in the SFG. I found a thread related to chickens and the SFG, so I'll post my queries there.

Hi lookmanoweeds,
Welcome to the Forum. We've got quite a few Texans here. Whereabouts are you in East Texas? I've got family in Palestine.

Is there anyone else doing square foot gardening in Amarillo Tx that ever visits any forum? Maybe we could meet and discuss our gardens

Thanks, SirTravers and Tim,

So far this year is going much better than last. I have some pics over on my blog http://lookmanoweeds.blogspot.com, but I haven't posted any new pics in the past week or so.

I do my gardening in Lufkin, which isn't too terribly far from Palestine in Texas terms.
