Yum! My melons are on the downturn. Picked a MN Midget today. And a Mlacktail Mountain about the size of a tennis ball....not so sure about that one. But vine getting old.

God bless me this AM with a yellow meat watermelon. Yes, I did the garden dance when I cut it open. It's really good. Learning a lot this year about growing melons.

Beautiful! Did this one come from a vine that you snipped off the extra vine?
Re: The SFG Journey-How Do You Know When Watermelons Are Ripe?
No. I gave up doing that snipping. too much work. I did as you suggested a let them grow. I do snip them back when they get too close to the other plants. I have gave up on them, because a heavy fungus, mildew had attack them. but I applied that potassium bicarbonate per Dirt Doctor posting and it knock it right out and they kept on growing, producing several melons. I'm still learning how to find the pigtail.

Yummy yellow melon!
On my first harvest, I didn't snip off anything. On this second harvest growing now, I am snipping away. It doesn't hurt to try something different, especially since it already gave me first fruits.
Do tell us if you think the yellow melon has a different taste.

Sanderson, I wanted to let you know that letting the watermelons to grows as you suggested was the best thing. The melon would grow upright, but they produce so much when allowed to grow on the ground. When they got too long, I simply just picked up the vines and threw it back on it self. the vines just adjust from that point and kept producing.
thank you.
thank you.
