100 feels like 123? What the ... I've never seen as dramatic a difference as that. And usually I see a wind-chill effect making it "feel like" it's cooler, not hotter.

I advise staying indoors and researching what sitting right under the air conditioner vents feels like.

It feels like a steam room outside.  There is 0 wind, and the air is greyish-yellow.  Somehow pollen and mold counts stay very high too.

The one good thing about very high humidity is that A/C's work quite well.  I know that in the desert areas of the nation, A/C doesn't really work at all, and you have to go with evaporative or swamp coolers.  We had one of those in Colorado, as our summers frequently experienced single-digit humidity.

It seems that just when you need a breeze the most -- when it's hot -- is when the air stops dead and refuses to blow an inch.

Our AC and it's fan have been running 24/7 for a month and will continue until fall. When it's humid, I have to lower it a degree or 2 at night to lower the house humidity. I get sick when it's 100+ and the air pollution hovers around the orange/red line for air pollution. We have the highest childhood asthma rate in the US.

I just turned my ductless heating/cooling thermostat down a notch for the cats' comfort.  In about an hour, our usual breeze should come up, and I'll go outside to put that high-tech planter, now filled with fresh MM (OUCH, my poor arthritic middle finger!) to good use.

I actually have the windows open and a couple fans on right now.   My A/C unit is Reagan Era and I keep it at 79 F if it is on.  Mercilessly undersized for the house.

Lived in Nashville for 6 years in the mid 80s, the humidity and temps are a crisis sometimes!  Stay chill, peeps!

Oh, Boffer, I feel terrible for you.  Without A/C, I would start to render quickly.  I am ready to move to the Northwest Territories or Barrow.

When we lost our A/C one year on July 4th weekend, we placed bowls of ice in front of fans and then draped ourselves in water-soaked beach towels, and still it was too uncomfortable in the house, when the thermostat hit 88 degrees.

After that year, we bought a portable evaporative cooler just in case it happens again.  It will cool one room down to 65 degrees.  We have also taken this baby outside and placed on the patio when barbecuing.

Cape Coddess, when will you open the first Square Foot Bed and Breakfast?  I daydream frequently about living in a climate like yours, but then I realize that it eventually becomes November 1, and I can still go hiking in short sleeves here.

Sanderson,

My cats must wear heavy fur coats at all times, so they don't do well in heat.  In fact, two years ago, when it hit 102F, I had to rush Sterling to the ER because he had a breathing crisis (supposedly asthma).

I do appreciate the humor, though.

In my area, temps are supposed to be 102 - 108 this weekend, although the official forecast is for the upper 90s.

Had a decision to make last last month - replace the electric range because the computer on the oven doesn't work (burners do) or replace the a/c.  Guess what, no baking for me this year but I'm cool.

Danna, Fur-less, hence the coats? If so, my apologies for my joke. I've rushed many a cat to the vet so I know how they are your babies.

Boffer, I'm a hot weather wimp.

Kay, Baking is way over rated. [except for maybe thanksgiving]

I used to have persians, and would come home during many summer days to find them lying on their backs looking as if they'd been flattened by a bowling ball. Poor things were so so hot in my so so hot apartment.

So I started shaving them. They loved it. I left the hair long on their head and some of their neck and the tip of their tail, so they would still look the same to each other, as I heard that's the best way to do it without freaking them out. Anyway it worked. They perked up considerably when shaved, and stopped looking half-dead by the time I came home from work.

You just don't want to shave them down enough to get sunburn if they're going to go outdoors.

I'm not Persian, but my wife has been shaving my head for the last 15 years.  She started doing it in summers, but she liked it better than my former mop and soon made it mandatory that I keep it at peach fuzz.  Somehow, this has not made me feel any cooler, and I must wear a cap to prevent sunburn.

Jumping into a cold bath with ice cubes is the way to cool down.  Then, when you get out, you are almost shivering and can go back outside and work for 20 minutes.

By the way, for those that wonder what the humidity was at the time these conditions were observed yesterday, it was 54% or the dewpoint temperature was a tad over 80 degrees.

Earlier today, it was 94 degrees with 56% humidity to make the heat index 107, or 16 degrees cooler feeling than yesterday.

Tonight, we should have storms at 1AM with temperatures around 80 and humidity at 100% for a 1AM heat index of 89.  Yes, A/C runs on full 24/7 here.

More like fur-plus!  Bijou is a Maine Coon mix, and Sterling, apparently a Siberian Forest Cat.

I'm not letting them out, other than in the early morning, until this heat wave ends. Those fur coats they have to wear would smothercate ( Laughing) them!

Meanwhile, the garden survives, and my cukes and beans are doing well.  I think, though, that I need to check my supply of freezer bags, replenish if necessary, and harvest the first crop of Asian greens.  Not to mention eat more salads in the near future.

Reminder to self:  Plant earlier next year!

Boffer, I love the dog picture! Sorry to hear about the A/C. I was a A/C tech for many years, funny how some people wouldn't open their windows for fear of thieves or allergies and they were in gated communities. Their houses were way hotter than the outdoor temps, never understood them.
