Re: What's Your Garden Sign?
Robinscabin....your plaques are fun! And your personal album!!!! Has everyone seen this?!?
Go look, go look....it is so beautiful.
Mirjam- that is a really good idea. I have a notebook for my garden charts, but sometimes I forget to write in it, or i just can't find it.

Really great markers! I might steal that some day. For now, you don't want to see my tongue depressors with Sharpie marker lables. LOLOL. It works, it's tidy, I've done it for years, and with a nearly 5 year old running around, we have HUGE bags of them in stock around the house.

Re: What's Your Garden Sign?
It's great to hear how everyone else handles the organization issues that plague gardening!
Silverbug~tongue depressors are classic, timeless... Martha Stewart may not approve but we sure do!
New2this~Thanks so much! Although, truth be told I made hubby do all the hard work...LOL
Megan~I never set out to use my blog as a journal but I know I've gone back and looked through old posts to see when I started this seed or did that chore...Good news is I can't lose my blog like my binder.
Miriam~Awesome Chart! Simple, easy to use, easy to update...What more does a garden chart need? My 6 yr. old daughter would say, "Pretty Stickers!"

Re: What's Your Garden Sign?
Thanks robbin. I am new to blogging and not great at it, so I never set out to make it anything more than a garden journal. And yes, it's easy for me to find, that is very important! I have this pet idea to try to make a database for crop rotation and/or companion planting, but I'm still trying to get my head around both the gardening concepts and MS Access.
Re: What's Your Garden Sign?
We did little squares last year than nailed them to a stick. My daughter painted the vegetable on each square.
The ovals are definitely cuter.

Re: What's Your Garden Sign?
I've never felt the need to compare myself to Martha Stewart.
If I had nearly unlimited cash, a gardener, a housekeeper, and plenty of other staff, as well as no husband (she's divorced) and no kids (her daughter is grown and married) to care for, I could be pretty darned creative, too!
I refuse to take on any guilt at all for writing on a plastic storebought plant marker with a pencil. (but yeah, I do covet Robinscabin's cute little markers!)

Re: What's Your Garden Sign?
Aren't you clever? Now you have me going. I was using old plastic disposable cups and magic marker - which are magic as they disappear. I was just contemplating a better system.
My three loves are gardening, painting and currency trading. I am really excited to get some permanent markers done now.
THANKS!

What cute little markers!!
I use plastic knives. I always have them left over from the pack.
I write on the handle with a sharpie. The date planted on the back. Then "stab" it into the soil.

Re: What's Your Garden Sign?
PB~ I tried that last year...my then 5 year old "borrowed" them for a picnic with her stuffed animals. LOL.
Chopper~Don't forget to show us a pic when you're done!
LaFee~ I couldn't agree about Martha Stewart more! I understand that it takes a team to create a show...but we at home don't have a team. She's one lady who could use the word "SIMPLIFY" in her life.
Megan~Don't be overwhelmed by the two concepts. There's a great section about them both in my favorite book: Storey's Basic Country Skills. It really breaks it down to easy info. Check your local library...it'll be worth it.
I thought you all might enjoy seeing what the White House uses as Garden Signs.
Cute and Simple.

tin can lids
Hi,
I like free stuff.
I make garden signs out of tin can lids. I'll post a picture soon, but you can see them already in my post in the gallery of gardens blog.
I don't use a lot of canned food, so I have a limited stock of 3 signs now (and one's a screw on lid). I started making them last month, so I now know we eat about two cans of canned food (tuna and tomato concentrate) a month. The third is really a screw on lid, but since it didn't have any print it worked fine as well, and you can't cut yourself on the edges.
For quick labelling we use popsicle sticks, free too, and we ate plenty of those, with the warm weather lately!
I really must post a picture!

Re: What's Your Garden Sign?
Very efficient system...but I don't know how you expect us to notice the garden markers when your ADORABLE son is in the photo!!! He's a cutie patootie!
Re: What's Your Garden Sign?
OK. You inspired me. Also all of the sharpie ink had faded from my plastic signs. I had bought some of the good plastic marker and decided to try something on them. It is just acrylic paint and gold artist's pen. I do not know yet if they will stand the test of time. Acrylic is pretty tough though.
I liked the minimalist look of the White House garden ones, but could not leave well enough alone. Not professional blocking of letters, but OK for my own garden. And hey, it was like 2 am. The design needs some attention too. I thought I would include the planting per square foot on the tags too. I fudged on the zucchini b/c although it says 1, it is actually 1 per 4 sf in this particular bed - among corn.
My good camera broke and this was taken with my cell. Can't get quite the crispness I would like!

I LOVE IT!
Looks amazing to me. I don't see a single flaw!!! I purposely picked a easy "child~like" font because my handwriting is so awful! But yours turned out beautifully.

Robbinscabin:
Your garden markers are very unique and wonderful!
I agree, you could definitely sell them.
You are obviously very artistic.
Happy gardening.....

Re: What's Your Garden Sign?
This is not my own original idea...I saw painted wooden spoons somewhere on the web but can't find them now but anyway, I bought wooden spoons at our $Tree (4 wooden spoons for $1) and someday (read 'next winter') will try to paint cute little veggies on them to use for crop signs. If I ever get one done I will post a pic

Re: What's Your Garden Sign?
What a great idea! I saw a sign of a different kind this week (more for the house than the garden) but boy...it seemed to really "fit"... It's Been Monday Everyday This Week.

Re: What's Your Garden Sign?
Your painted signs are so cute! I hope they last!
I also heard of people painting smooth rocks, and using those as garden markers, but I haven't tried that, myself.
Last year, I tried making my own plant markers out of big popsicle sticks glued to wooden shapes (from the craft store), and I used a woodburner to write the plant name. It sure looked nice! But they didn't last the season. :-(
Now, I am using purchased metal ones from the garden store:

Those are really cute! What happened to them? Did you use a clear coat on them after woodburning?
Re: What's Your Garden Sign?
Nope! I didn't coat them with anything. If I did, they probably would've lasted, I guess. I am reluctant to put plastic or paint in the garden. The metal ones I'm using this year will last much longer! :-)

Here's my garden signs. Made myself from tin can lids and some wire. In case you're wondering, it says 'AARD-BEI', which is Dutch for strawberry.

Re: What's Your Garden Sign?
My daughter's family lives with me. She asked her 6 year old to go out and get some dill and he said "which is dill?" Then he said, "Nevermind, I'll read the signs". A few minutes later he came in with a few sprigs of dill! So, the signs aren't just for the gardener.
Re: What's Your Garden Sign?
I can't agree more! My kindergartener was out in the garden and suddenly she came running across the lawn. She raced into the house and hurriedly screamed, "THESQUASHAREHERE!" I glanced out the window at the driveway...I wasn't sure who but it sounded like someone was here. I said, "No one is here." She impatiently stomped her cute little foot and very slowly (like I was a bit daft) said, "THE SQUASH ARE HERE!" I laughed a little and said, "How do you know?" She said, "I read the sign!" After a short walk to the garden I found that indeed the Squash had arrived.
RE: Whats your sign
I thought I was doing good with pieces of mini blind with permanent marker used to write on... Now I must get busy. LOL
