Good thing you got so lucky, Boffer. Talk about minimal damage.
A neighbor of mine, when I was a kid, had a huge tree crash right through their living room in the early morning hours. Even they were lucky; a few yards over and it would have hit all the bedrooms in a line.
We cut down over 20 trees this year, as hazard prevention. You gotta keep your eye out for these things!

I hear ya! I had live trees coming down on a regular basis every winter when the rain and wind conditions were just right. I finally had 82 trees topped before my luck ran out, and that was the end of easy firewood!

Heh, yeah, that is a nice side benefit. We restocked ours pretty well this year too.
Already I'm noticing dead trunks of madrone trees, still attached to the rest of the tree they sprang from, here and there. We're surrounded by them, and have always got some of them dying off close by.

My Dad actually had those hand tools. I wish I hadn't sold them at the Estate Sale. (Like I would ever use them)
