southern gardener, never fear, your pics alone do your garden justice. I saw your movie on FB.  That bougainvilla (sp) makes a wonderful backdrop for your garden.  How long do the blooms last.

oh cool!! did you go on FB to see it, or from here?? I'm so used to seeing the bougainvillea, I really don't even pay attention??  I think it blooms all the time. Poor thing. When we got frost, it died back and comes back all beautiful!!! I'll try and pay more attention. There are lots of birds nests in it right now. The mommas are very clear when I get too close!! They chirp and dart all over!!  Smile

Yes, SG, I could not open your video on this board so I went to FB and saw it there. It's funny how such a striking feature as the bourgainvillea becomes almost invisible to you.

I have the same effect when I close out the power and phone lines that border my property and really only notice them when I take a picture. I never did notice them when my trees were there because the lines went right through them.  I asked the power company to do something about trimming the trees for safety and they had an actual work order on hand for four years. Every year I quoted the number and they said yes, we will do it this year. I did hope that a branch would fall and put the city in darkness but that never happened. But they waited me out and I had to have the trees felled at my cost as they were dying and the trees were on my land. In some ways I am glad otherwise I doubt I would be doing this BTE form of gardening and it has also given me more room for SFG beds as well and I am thoroughly enjoying it all.
Instead of spending hours (or four days in one case) clearing up the debris whenever fierce winds sweep through, I can spend my energy on clearing my hillside where I used to put the fallen wood and I have quite a bit up there and little by little I collect the soft bits and break them up to add to my BTE spaces.
The only downside now is getting the fall leaves from my own trees, generally 60 to 80 garbage bags each year. I will be putting out a call in the fall for leaves and see what turns up. I reckon over time I will be able to build up a list of people who have bagged their leaves and are happy to deliver them to me. At worst, I can offer to sweep up, bag them and take them away

We are planning on planting 12 more too!  LOL. Every year, we plant pumpkins, and we hardly get ANY!! The only ones that have done well, are the "volunteer" ones that come up by our pig pens. They do AWESOME! The ones we planted this year are all different varieties for our grand babies Smile Maybe THIS will be the year we actually get some!! haha! I don't know what we'll do if we get bunches, but the pigs love pumpkins and so do chickens, so between the grand babies, chickens, neighbors and pigs, they'll get taken care of!!   moved our beds - Page 7 4022887542  moved our beds - Page 7 4022887542

Ah, well with pigs, you should get through excess food with gusto!

In Italy they raise some pigs on specialized diets, very heavy on this or that herb or grass or grain. I wonder what a pig raised on pumpkin would taste like.

We planted parsnips in April, and heard they are kind of finicky to grow. Ours came up great and we could see a shoulder, so we pulled one. It's about 9" long...looks good...so now what do we do?  LOL

I like them a lot in stews and soups, but generally added later so they don't get mushy. They're wonderfully aromatic.

I like them glazed, too. Dice and mix it with diced carrots. They cook quicker than carrots and loose texture more easily, so don't try to cook them both in the same pan unless you want the parsnips to become soggy and start to disappear.

What I like to do is microwave carrots until no longer crunchy but not at all soft either -- anywhere from two to four minutes depending on size of dice or slices, and parsnips for half that time. Discard any juices that have come out or save them for a soup. Then transfer both to a pan and sautee in butter and some salt(helps caramelize) over low heat, not stirring, until at least half of them have browned. They are great just like that, but for increased browning without having to cook them much longer, and to add some more flavor, add a few teaspoons of sugar, stirring well. Brown a little further under higher heat, a minute or two, letting the sugar turn into a syrup in the pan and coat the veggies, and serve before the syrup evaporates away. Both sugar and salt encourage caramelization(browning), which really adds a lot to the flavor and the visual appeal.

Finely diced caramelized onions add a nice touch, but are not necessary. Best to cook those in a separate pan so all the liquid they release doesn't wind up making your carrots and parsnips steam and boil instead of brown.

Well, I know at least some types of parsnips can grow quite a bit longer, but not if that's the type you have. I've also never grown parsnips myself.

It seems to me that as long as the parsnip won't get woody, fatter is better than longer. The really long parsnips are often so skinny for the last inches that you aren't getting much food value out of those extra inches. But a long root crop even a little wider is going to have a lot more edible flesh. Still, I have no idea if your leaving them in the ground a while more would let them get either fatter or longer. Maybe some of the other folks here can advise you.

Does your seed packet indicate how long they get? Most of mine say stuff like that.
