Monthly Avatar Theme September 2013: Harvest!
It seemed the monthly avatar theme ritual had run it's course, but I guess I was wrong Everyone seems to be pretty content with the theme for September being Harvest. So show everyone what ya got!
My avatar is a harvest from a few weeks ago.

So far I have 4-1 gal. bags of Purple King Pole Beans sitting in my freezer. I could take a picture of one of the bags but they turn green once they are blanched. The fun part about growing this vegetable is the color, so this is what they look like before I pick them.

Re: Monthly Avatar Theme September 2013: Harvest!
OK, finally got a recent harvest that's not all greens. Back when we posted avatars under the theme of what we were really looking forward to from our SFGs, I put up a white cucumber, saying that ANY cucumber would be welcome since I had such a bad time with them last year.
Well, this year wasn't much better due to an ongoing battle with powdery mildew, but I stayed ahead of it enough to get these today:
Even though they are Straight 8s I picked them smallish, about 5", as there are so many others up the vines waiting to grow.
I am SO HAPPY!

WTG CC! It's nice when you can harvest something you have had so much trouble with. It really gives you a sense of accomplishment and makes you a very happy and proud mama/gardener. I love the photo you chose for your avatar...it's perfect!!!

CC- and I bet those will be the best tasting cukes ever! I am still waiting for fordhook giant chard that was monstrous last year but at this time is still too puny to bother with. Weird.

WOW! Nice harvest, Laydera! How wonderful for you!
Why did you pick the green tomatoes? Is it getting cold in your area?

Re: Monthly Avatar Theme September 2013: Harvest!
Here is some of this years ( 2013 Sept ) harvest from my ANSFG raised beds.
The long sweet red peppers are shop purchased representations but I do have numerous green ones still on the plants in the glasshouse
We ate the following tonight for evening meal :-
The marrow , half of it in 1 & 1/2 inch thick rings less the skin & seeds stuffed with a thick minced meat and gravy mix .
The Chou d' Au Benton ( perennial kale )
The broccoli ( regrowth after taking off a nice 6 inch head a five weeks ago .
All the runner beans ..not a stringy one found .
The celery leaves were added to the mince so was a bit of fine chopped rosemary
The carrot
The strawberries will get eaten tomorrow lunch time as well as one of the big beefsteak toms ( with mozzarella cheese , those chives and thick orange flavoured balsamic vinegar ).
At tea time we'll use some home grown garlic , onions & that leek along with the rest of the marrow mince and a bit more home made gravy .
I've still got the vast majority of the apple cucumbers .
.
other stuff is the aubergines for mousakka ( sp ) on Wednesday , nasturtium leaves and flowers in a cheese sandwich at lunch time .
There are also home grown dried peas and runner beans for next years seeds and a few pounds in vac sealed bags for consumption in mild chilli con carne and soups or boiling up with some pork etc.
Some of the peas will get soaked in bi carb over night and boiled to death to make soft mushy green peas especially for me as I love to eat them .
There is also the remains of a five inch dia purple khol rabbi which was as flavourful , sweet , crisp and free of any sort of woodiness as you could ever wish to eat.
