yes, it's a kohl rabi. We diced them all up and oven baked them for dinner. they were DELISH! My grandson asked for a bag of the veggies to take to eat on the way home ! He LOVED them! We put in a bunch of the garlic and onions too YUMMO! I wish you could smell them

Thank you! she's sooo sweet. We then discovered these beautiful Brandywine tomatoes! They're beautiful!!  They're each about 3-4 inches and they're still green!!

Southern Gardener - This is my first year gardening and my Beefsteak tomato plant doesn't look nearly as lush as yours. My cherry tomato looks pretty decent and has lots of green tomatoes right now. What do you think the secret to growing nice tomatoes is? Watering? I have decent compost and I water it with worm casting tea.

ps - I don't think your grand daughter is looking at the camera in the pic. She's looking at the veggie plants thinking, "Yessss!!!!! What am I going to harvest next?".

Hi Grownsunshine: This plant is not in our SFG beds. This is in regular "soil" out front. We put in about 1-2 feet of pig manure a couple of years ago to raise the level of the soil, then topped it off with soil and our OLD mel's mix with sand in it, probably about 2-3"??. This bed is by FAR our best bed. This plant is actually a "sucker" from a plant in our SFG, and is going nuts. The tomatoes in our SFG bed are struggling like yours it sounds like.  We grew a monster plant last year in this same bed...if you look under the posts about big stuff  https://squarefoot.forumotion.com/t11370-big-stuff?highlight=big+stuff, you'll see the pic. We also have Swiss Chard in the same bed with massive leaves. Makes me want to dig up all our beds and put pig manure underneath! I think my hubby would string me up if we have to dig up our beds again   Yes, I think you're right about her wondering what we were gonna get next!  haha. She and big brother pulled all the beans and my teeny tiny ears of corn.
To answer your question, I think it's the pig manure, and we just sort of water this plant when we remember...maybe once or twice a week? We don't get much rain here..

Wow! I checked out the pic and that tomato plant is a monster!!! Looks like you could've fed an army with it. The tomato plant I'm struggling with either had a twin or a shoot. I cut it off and am regrowing it in water. Either way, I'm thinking it may have been stealing nutrients from the main plant. I also put some store bought compost (ugh!) on top of the MM. It's I've got so much to learn and need to get more sources for my compost with pig manure if possible. I'm looking into the dairies in Chino and a compost source out in Hemet. Thanks for your input...much appreciated!!!

do you know if the plant you're having problems with is a determinate or indeterminate? Determinates only grow so much, then they stop...you get less fruits. Indeterminates are the ones that get huge and throw off lots of suckers, that's what was in the Big Stuff area. It was a teeeny tiiiny volunteer we just threw in there for the heck of it! lol Good luck!!

Yeah, it's a Beefsteak, indeterminate. I had a few suckers from the main plant, had them in water and tonite I put them in MM in a small pot. I put the pot in water to keep the roots wet and growing. I need to find pig poo and throw one of them in there  .

OK...that's good it's indeterminate! I wouldn't go out of your way to find the "pig poop". According to some, it's not recommended  . We just used it (we had a LOT!) to raise the level of the beds. We were only going to plant flowers in the bed, but we transplanted that 1" tall volunteer tomato plant in there and WOWZA, did it work! So, we have tried this bed again this year, and are having the same results. Huge plants and harvests. We just planted a whole bunch of other "stuff" to see what else we come up with!! As far as I've read, the only reason to avoid "pig poo" is swine flu.

welp. this is the corn we planted. It only had one in 9 squares...so a big energy hog...ended up with 11 ears on ONE stalk!!  Here are 2 of the eleven!!

Didn't make it in the house ... you just ate them raw? LOL, hadn't ever heard of people doing that before. But I try to cook fresh corn only long enough to make it hot, myself. I feel guilty cooking it more than two minutes!

I didn't know corn could produce so many cobs on one stalk. That is wonderful. What kind of/cultivar of corn was it?

Well, I personally didn't get any of these!  lol the kids ate them RAW! It was so sweet and tender. It's Silver Queen. We thought there were 10 ears, but found another one hiding when we picked one of these. I've never heard of that many either. We picked a bunch of veggies and big brother helped chop everything up for dinner, boy was it good! When we peeled back the shuck, I thought the corn didn't pollinate since it was so white colored, then we realized, that's the color of Silver Queen.

Congrats on your Silver Queen. I looked for seeds today but it doesn't seem available at HD and Lowes. I settled for Bantam just to plant 4 seeds. Any advice where I can find Silver Queen? Thanks.
