My First SFG with pics
I have 2 beds so far. Large bed is 6'x3' and the smaller bed is just for lettuces. 2'x 3' I was reusing wood supplies so that is as large as the second could be with things to hand. I built the first one a week or so ago and have peas, carrots, spinach, beets, scallions and lettuce in. I have 4 spots saved for tomatoes ( inside ) and a pepper which I will buy as a starter.
Yesterday I made hoop houses! I am really pleased with the results
Used 1/2' water pipe, pipe clips, deck screws, plastic tie wraps and for the clips to hold the 6 mil plastic, I used 3/4' pipe cut to 2" lengths and cut out about 3/4" so they can snap on the covers.

Your new garden is terrific. Great job. You should be able to start things a little earlier with those hoops and also extend your fall crops. Terrific.

We became empty nesters last year - the adjustment will come in time. There is a new freedom that I am enjoying a lot. I agree, gardening is a godsend, it's fun, you still get to use the nurturing instinct and heck, if the plants don't turn out right you simply dispose of them

I clearly remember when I became an empty nester with the two kids from my first marriage after all the heartache & fun of bring them up .. I worried about them all the time . I worried myself sick that they might come back one day
Now you have the time ..fill it with soul satisfying gardening and look to the simplicity of nature all around you.

I was in the garage yesterday building my 2 potato towers/boxes and my teeth crowns fell out!
Had to rush to the dentist this morning without uncovering the beds. Got back just now and boy is it toasty inside that hoop house . Im glad I left them on thought as it snowed this am !

You're not suppose dispose them but I think some parents try something like this and before you know it they grow up and leave anyway. Then us parents can do this And Sometimes my daughter from 3 states over visits this site -- (if she reads this)LuvYaHoney... Mom

My boy has just been home from College for 4 days for easter break. All that time i was working in the garden, making hoop houses and such. He didnt say " good job Mum " once although he will love eating the tomatoes and peas in the summer. He will probably ask me where i bought them !!
I need to dispose of him, he eats too much!

About your son, perhaps encouraging others doesn't happen naturally until parenting skills evolve. And as far as food goes, I would make double batches of pancakes when the two kids were at home and have zero leftovers. Now one batch is too much for us, we eat them for two days then the rest end up in the worm bin.

April 27th update
No pictures as I have been rushed off my feet today !
Day 23 for Bed number 1
Everything that is up already seems to be doing good. Freeze last night but the hoop houses and blankets worked. I even had some new sprouts this morning.
The Nantes Carrot square has 4 sprouts ( they came up day 10 )
Today I dug up the pea squares , slowly sifting through every inch and did NOT find a single pea... hmmmm. I am not that senile that I didnt plant them, I KNOW I planted. They were my first seeds. Some bugger from above or below has taken them. I replanted some seeds I had soaked. just 8 per square this time at one side and radish in front. I will be giving away radish at this rate.
I also planted a few more seeds where odd ones had not come through. a few scallions, a few Spinach and a couple of Lettuce.
Bed Number 2 ( FAIL )
absolutely nothing has sprouted in this bed. I dug around and couldnt find any signs of germination. I replanted the leaf lettuce and scallions. Nantes carrots not up yet.
TATER DAY !
Planted the potatoes in the two towers I made a few weeks back. I bought certified seed potatoes. Butter Finger Fingerling and La Ratte Fingerlings. Not many eyes on the Butter ones but sooooo many on the La Ratte. I have many spare and might make another tower next week.
Have fun over the weekend people , I am out of town till Monday. See you when I get back with an update of whether my plants lived or died without me .

May 4th Update
Bed 2 a complete fail!
I had replanted lettuce , spinach and leaf lettuce exactly a week ago so there is time for those yet. The Nantes Carrots planted April 16 still no sign. It's almost as though something has sabotaged this bed...
Bed number 1 ( back to front I know)
Beets, carrots, radish, spinach, lettuce and scallions coming along slowly. Today I have signs of pea sprouts which I replanted last week! I have about 10 Nantes sprouts.
The garden survived the 88 degree weather yesterday! It's Michigan for God's sake ! Then I fastened up the hoop house plastic for the night leaving it slightly vented. MAJOR storms all evening and into the wee hours. My garden is a swamp.
This afternoon I noticed a lone potato plant peaking through the earth in Tower 1. whoo hoo!
This evening I treated the lawn and beds to some Beneficial Nematodes as I seem to be overun with shore flies, the june bugs soon to be and spotted some cutworms the other week whilst digging. I also have a problem each summer with tiny cricket things.
I also treated myself to a few Nematodes, splashed some in my eye and probably swalloed some too.......... if I dont come back this week.............. ciao

Well I hope not ciao... you're funny. Sorry about the weird hot weather you are having, darn that bed number two, errrrr. I wish you the best of luck in the upcoming season, I really hope the nematodes didn't get you too bad and that you will start seeing more and more sprouts!

LOL I AM STILL HERE!
I have felt ill all night but that could be the Broccoli Beef Stir fry with lots and lots of ginger! ( now there's a thought, I would love to grow Ginger)
Hubby is laughing at me, he says I might lose weight if the worms eat me from the inside.
Bed number 2 is really making me cross, nothing this morning!
2 more potato plants in Tower 1 !
