Coming Soon! Seed Traders Corner
As some may (or may not) have noticed, there is a new seed exchange forum in the works. It will be located about half way down on the index page, right before the Contest forum and Regional forums.
While I can truly appreciate all the time and effort put into the current Seed Exchange, I never did find it to be particularly easy to navigate, or forum friendly. It just didn't seem to fit. And I mean NO disrespect to the creator as it took a lot of time to put together. But I don't see the current exchange used much and I've had numerous emails and pm's on how to use it exactly. I never used it just because it seemed like such a chore.
Seeds are a hot topic here on our forum and I just thought it was time for a change and maybe something a bit more personal. I'm putting together several different forums in the exchange to break the seeds down some for easier reference. Honesty and trust is going to come into play here.
If you have hybrid seed and know for a fact it's hybrid, then place your available seeds in the hybrid section. Same with heirlooms.
Some seed knowledge and honesty is going to play a role here. If you are a seed saver, you need to be honest about hybrids/heirlooms, breeding true, cross pollination and so on. I don't think we'll have much of a problem here on the forum as we are a pretty honest bunch and love to see others succeed.
So, let's say you have lot's of purple beans available. You would go to the vegetable section and start a thread: Purple Beans Avail. you would list a brief description and how much you have to get rid of. Someone likes your beans and makes a post asking for more info perhaps or just says pm sent, indicating they are truly interested. The transaction would take place through pm...address exchange etc. I don't think I need to go into tons of detail here, but you could also start a thread in the vegetable seed section if you're looking for purple beans...Purple Beans Wanted! Let others know exactly what you're looking for. Someone pops up and says,"Hey I got some purple beans for ya!" The transaction is handled through pm's... The person receiving the beans (or whatever) sends a SASE (self addressed stamped envelope) to the bean (or whatever) holder.
There has been some discussion of a Trading Post in the exchange. Seed in the Trading Post would be just that. Traded. You send me something, I send you something. Done deal.
What the seed exchange forum won't be used for is seed discussions. We already have a forum for that. That's not to say you can't discuss the qualities, varieties and so on of the seed you're putting up or interested in obtaining.
This is also not the place for selling or any type of monetary gain transactions.
I do think this method of seed exchange will be a lot more interactive and interesting and hopefully easier for everyone. I'm still working on getting everything in order, but some have noticed the seed exchange forum work taking place and I thought I would go ahead and let everyone know what's in the works and what is taking place. I have goofed on the code a time or two and the site has looked a bit funky a time or two when this has happened.
Be a bit patient with me and hopefully I'll have the new forums up and running soon!

Thanks for the exchange set up Rooster .
One thing that must be included is that to send some types of seeds over international and in some cases county borders is illegal and could land you in trouble as the sender or as the recipient . It is a bit of a minefield so do your home work first please.

I will be adding a few things in, but I think the new Seed Traders is up and ready for the most part! I've tested the new forums out on Chrome, Maxthon3, Firefox and IE9. Everything seems to be functioning and set up properly. If you notice something, please let me know. Enjoy

I am pretty sure greatcob meant NON-heirloom open pollinated variety.....as in a modern open pollinated variety that has been developed recently enough it does not qualify as being "heirloom".

I knew what thegreatcob meant...
I believe for the most part the main categories are covered for the majority of our users. We could obviously go way overboard with different categories for everything out there.

Re: Coming Soon! Seed Traders Corner
there is no standard definition of heirloom. the term was adapted to fit seeds the where developed as open pollinated varieties before the introduction of hybrid to the public.
the term heirloom when it come to vegetables dates to 1950.

Unfortunately this is why I can't participate in this even though I'd love to. Stuff would never get through Aussie quarantine, they are REALLY strict!
But have fun guys, it's a great idea, especially for newbies like me with only small gardens, a regular seed packet goes a long way and will probably be useless by the time I could use them all so sharing benefits everyone.

Re: Coming Soon! Seed Traders Corner
camprn i have about 100 different seed packets that could swap seed from.
but i usually swap seed at local seed swap we have in the spring.
I used to swap seeds by mail. but i used to get to many sase and not to many seeds in return. it also go overwhelming I now only swap with 10 people by mail.
one thing you might need to add is away to discontinue seeds offering on the trade boards or limit offering to month before renewal by the trade poster

Rooster, I'm not seeing any rules in the Seed exchange section, either I'm blind or it's not showing up for some reason!

Just thought I'd check just in case others couldn't find them either.

Great! Any time a new post or topic is replied to in the seed exchange, the rules should appear. I figured they would be harder to overlook that way
