Holy Trellis
Or maybe that should be holey trellis
I saw the holey trellis in a picture in a magazine, and my dad helped me make one for my cucumber plant.
Next to it is my high rise for my 14 inch world record size carrots,
then my worm tube that is working out pretty good so far

This is great !! I like the idea. Your beds look nice and keep us posted on the worms I saw that earlier in another thread as well.

Josh,
I was also wondering, do you have a fair there where you might enter your world record carrots ? I think that would be wonderful for others to see the great things done in your garden. Or have you done something like that already? I could see it as showing folks the efficiency of SFG.

Re: Holy Trellis
elliephant it's made from a 1x10 pine board thats 4 feet tall. My dad screwed some stakes on the bottom of it to hold it in the ground. I drew around a coffee can for the larger hole, and then cut them out with a jig saw with my dads help. The other holes are drilled out, my dad had some drill bits that make different size holes.
Ha-v-v I'm not sure about the fair, I've never been to one. Maybe I can go to one this year and see what it's all about!

Re: Holy Trellis
The county fair was always fun for me, I have wanted to enter my veggies since I was young, and Ive just never been a gardener until now. I have yet to even think about entering anything though. Look up your county fair and see when it is. Walk around and see what they offer for the produce etc. I did win 3rd place one year with a plum jam that was fun. Its a fun way to get to know the community as well. Your garden looks great and Im so impressed :-D Keep on sharing

Cool trellis
Josh that's some fine craftsmanship. The motorhead in me keeps thinking it looks like a giant gasket from some kind of monster engine hehe. It will be neat to watch the vines attack it!

What is the twirly thing in the other corner of that box? Tomato stake/trellis? Did you make it? If so how, I really like the look of it.

Holey Trellis
Very nice job Josh!! I too think it looks like something for a motor!! Hubby is into race cars... Can you Tell??
I have been on the lookout for pvc pipe. Like Boffer, I like to make things out of what I can scrounge up. That is half the fun!! I love wormies in my garden. Whenever I find one I throw them into my SFG. Now they need a tower to live the "good life" in. Just movin' on up!!
Did you make the clay pot tower too? Does it have a wire in it, and is it bent to shape the pots?

Re: Holy Trellis
Thanks everyone, glad you liked it.
That's funny that you guys think it looks like some kind of engine gasket, my dad said the same thing!
auntiemommy that is a tomato spiral trellis, I bought it last year, it has a stake that holds the one end in the ground, and it fastens to the wooden stake at the top. I used it last year and it works pretty good. You have to keep the tomato plant trimmed to one or two stems and keep all the leaves tucked inside the spiral trellis, it helps keep the tomato plant from taking up so much room.
PB that's my mom's garden with the flower pot tower, I did help her make it last year, you just take a metal rod and run it through the holes in the pots and into the ground to keep it from falling over, you dont have to bend it, just pull the pots from one side to the other.
My dad, mom, and me each have our own garden, and then we have what we call specialty gardens, like a strawberry garden, blackberry garden, blueberry garden, potato garden, vine garden, making it all a family garden.

Re: Holy Trellis
Wow, Josh, your garden is so inspiring! My 9-year-old wants an SFG of his own and he already asked for a worm tube.
Re: Holy Trellis
miinva you son will like having a worm tube I bet! It's fun feeding them in the tube! Keep me posted of how it works out for him.
Thanks again everyone!

Re: Holy Trellis
Josh, are the pictures of your garden from this year? I'm in zone 5b and we had frost three days ago. What I can see on your pictures is a huge difference between plants growth here in 5b, and your zone 6. We cannot dream of putting tomatoes out. I would never guess the difference is so big!
You have really great garden, and it is so nice to share your passion with the family.

Re: Holy Trellis
Jola, yes it is this years garden, we have been harvesting radishes, lettuce, onions, spinach and strawberries.
My garden was just built this year since we changed some of them around, the one i had last year is now the strawberry garden.
this is a picture of mine when we made it on 3-29
and here is a picture of the stacked layered one now
We have had some really cold nights but no frost, lots of rain, most regular gardeners haven't been able to plant yet. The tomatoes are blooming and some have tomatoes on them.

Re: Holy Trellis
Look Josh! You inspired me!! I got it done! The plants are newly transplanted today, so it will take them a while to fill out the pots. Thank you for the great idea! It was so easy!

looks great!
Josh, I'm a new member, but I've been going through the message archives and have read quite a few of your posts. I'd like you to know that I think you are a "natural" at teaching.
Love the garden you have this year and looking forward to watching everyone's SFG's progress through the season.
NOTE to PB - just LOVE the way you have the stacked pots.
