Re: Carrot Week 2012!
I saw a shoulder on a scarlet nantes carrot week carrot this morning.
But I pulled a kaledescope to check out. Planted about 2 weeks after carrot week.

Probably a little late to be asking this but.... is there a high temp where you should pull carrots? I feel like I should pull all my carrots and hope they haven't become too woody since it's been soo hot here the last week.

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
Yesterday the 1st Nantes variety carrot was pulled from my Carrot Week box.
That's my 5y/o grandson holding the carrot after giving his grand aunt the 1st bite. She ate the whole c. 6"-7" root saying, "It's delicious and sweet!".

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
admin!
After "Big Sis" gave that 1st Nantes such a rave review I decided to do some "late" thinning!
Here are the thinnings.
DW cleaned and sliced them up, added some peas she shelled earlier plus her choice of spices, herbs and sauce. Tasty!
obtw: I added MM to the remaining Nantes to cover their exposed shoulders.
Hope that was the right thing to do!

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
I would have done the same, I've heard somewhere that leaving them uncovered is what causes the green tops that you sometimes get with carrots. Not sure how true that is but why take chances!
My carrot week carrots are still going very slowly, it's been a cold winter here (well, cold for us anyway!) and thing just aren't growing too well. It'll probably be a few months before I can pick them, I had a feel in the soil the other day and couldn't find any shoulders at all, not even good enough for baby carrots!
Will try to take some pics soon.

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
So Sunday marks 90 days for my Carrot Week carrots. I've pulled 2 of them so far and they are great! Sunday, I'll check a few more. Who else still has their Carrot Week carrots in the ground/box and how are they doing?

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
Snacked on my first thinnings of Carrot Week planting yesterday for breakfast. OOOOOOhhhhh, so yummy! BUT the biggest was only just under 1/2" diameter and only 3" long. My Cosmic Purples planted almost a month later are growing much better. I think April is just too early for carrots here.

I had to corral my carrots. It's a good carrot year.

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
camp, those look like mine. Every time I water, they lay down, and they're getting slower and slower to stand back up.
Glad Roo said something, as I hadn't checked them in a while. Pulled a couple Coreless Nantes yesterday, six inchers...oh so sweet.

Re: Carrot Week 2012!
I don't seem to to have enough computer oomph to post pictures from here, but my last harvest on July 7 included a carrot week carrot about the size of a large cayenne pepper. I'll check again in Sep

Thinning is only needed if you oversow! Instead of planting 16 per square, I just scatter the seeds for carrots, as I have had trouble with germination of carrots several times. I like to make sure there are LOTS of seeds out there so I get SOME carrots!

The credit for those carrots goes to CapeCoddess (CC)! I got to eat a few of my thinnings, but CC's are the ones in that beautiful picture! Mine were not picture worthy, but those nibbles were tasty.

Rooster, is it time to pick yet? Every time I water I start calculating the days...April 12 + 70 or 77 days...it has to be soon!
I've got some contest Nantes with nice shoulders. Most of the greens are small compared to other carrots I've grown.
What's our harvest date?

Nice looking shoulders. Ava, go ahead and harvest some of the carrots when ever you want. Carrot week was a fun event not a contest.AvaDGardner wrote:Rooster, is it time to pick yet? Every time I water I start calculating the days...April 12 + 70 or 77 days...it has to be soon!

I think almost everyone had a good degree of success with carrots this year. I know I have, which is good because last years carrots were a bust.
