nKedrOoStEr wrote:I made my mom a sprout jar and gave it to her yesterday. She was thrilled. Minus the butt chewing I will receive from my wife once she finds out what I did to her splatter guard and one of my canning jars, it cost me pennies for a tablespoon of seeds I put in for her to start.
But you are right llama. It would make a great gift! Buy a pack or two of seeds and include in the jar...I even saw sprout lids at the market that where well under $2.
You got my wheels a turning!
And my seeds are sprouting nicely this a.m.
Thanks for the awesome Christmas gift idea for my Mom. She's extremely hard to buy for!
I don't know how much sprout-growing we'll do but I know for sure that the two of us would use this to grow bean sprouts used in Chinese cooking. I can't buy bean sprouts at any grocery store any more. I don't even think you can buy them at the chinese specialty shops any more.

I use to "sprout" back in 80's but got away from it. It just may be time to start again with something other than bean sprouts for oriental cooking. E-coli scares in sprouts makes me not want to buy from a store.

Re: Anyone grow sprouts?
A few months ago Lavender Debs opened my eyes to the current fad of micro-greens. (I guess it's current; these things usually come and go before I find out about them!)
My question: Don't sprouting and growing micro-greens accomplish the same end result? The sproutpeople.com sell a lot of 'leafy' (their word) seeds.
I was served Bull's Blood Baby Beet Greens as a garnish on blackened fish recently. It looked good, but didn't add anything flavor wise.

Xmas wish list
My Xmas wish list is offcially all garden related:
Dehydrator
Salad spinner
Sprouting lids - I'd like to try sprouting but I have also had countless lids ruined by havng holes punched in them for varoius creatures collected by the kids over the years.
Wood for 2 beds (HD or Lowes gift card would be nice)

Re: Anyone grow sprouts?
Hey Boffer, I think I can answer your question since I've done sprouting and I also grew micro greens in my SFG this year:
Micro greens are grown in the soil and "harvested" - you cut them down above the soil line when they are two to three inches tall. Sprouts aren't planted, so you eat the whole thing, seed, little rootlings, and all.

When I said: "...the same end result.."
What I was thinking was, if you grow micro-greens a couple inches tall and then snip them off, do you basically get the same things as letting your sprouts grow to a couple inches long? I grew sprouts in the 70's, but I haven't grown micro-greens.
It's my usual effort to find the laziest way of doing something; it seems to me that sprouts would be easier.
I just saw gwennifer's reply as I got ready to post. So, theoretically, wouldn't sprouting be healthier than micro's?

Staf, I don't know yet. This is my first time! But from sprouts I have purchased from the market before, I like the hotter ones. Like radish!
When I tried the teas after soaking them, the alfalfa tea was by far the best.

I wonder if you could use the tulle that some SFGs use for cabbage fly protection instead of the splatter screen mesh to avoid the splinters?

I'm not going near a food store today or tomorrow (I'm trying to hang on to my wee bit of madness for the Holly Daze), but will set this up on Friday. The Daikon radish and Arugula are calling to me for leftover turkey sandwiches!!!!

Lucy,
I don't know if my splatter screen was better quality or what, but I had zero of the splintering issues like the tutorial. just fyi...
I am sure a CLEAN pair of panty hosers would would ok? Now that my sprouts are getting thicker, it is a little slower to drain, but I just store them upside down on a towel so it doesn't accumulate.
Its been a fun process and my mom has really been enjoying hers too!

Re: Anyone grow sprouts?
So my sprouts went CRAZY last night and I am officially calling them done!
radish
Incredibly simple and I cannot believe how quick! I will never buy sprouts again!
There are a few things I am going to different on some of the other sprouts. I think my bean sprout beans are either old or?
The alfalfa sprouts and broccoli sprouts I need to agitate a little better with a fork or something to seperate them a bit better. But all in all
I call this simple success.

One thing I do when I grow sprouts is Iafter the daily rinse I lay the jar on it's side to allow more separation of the seed and allow more growing room. :idea:nKedrOoStEr wrote:The alfalfa sprouts and broccoli sprouts I need to agitate a little better with a fork or something to seperate them a bit better.

Anyone else sprouting?
So far I have done radish, broccoli, alfalfa, fenugreek, and a legume mix.
They are all excellent! I would have to say the radish are my absolute fav. and the alfalfa has an outstanding taste to compared to what you can get in the store.
My momma has also just had tons of fun doing this and they are great!
