Brussel Sprouts grow well in SFG system???
Hi
Could anyone tell me if the vegetable 'Brussel Sprouts' grows well in the SFG system. The reason I ask is that I usually firmed the soil (taken from a gardening book a number of years ago) to the extent that it was difficult to plant the brussel sprouts, the reason for this was to ensure firm sprouts, never had any trouble with 'blow sprouts'.

Re: Brussel Sprouts grow well in SFG system???
Here are a is a thread where folks have been successful with brussel sprouts in the SFG, they will be in 4-6 squares of my garden this spring.

I know Boffer had some photos of his in a thread somewhere...but I cannot seem to find it.
The word in the forum is that they seem to work just fine in a SFG.

Re: Brussel Sprouts grow well in SFG system???
I planted Brussel sprouts last year in my SFG bed. They did very well and the only reason I didn't plant them this year is because we learned that we don't care for them in my family.
You pick them from the bottom up.
These are mine in Oct last year. They can keep growing even in the colder weather.

I know everything taste much better out of your own garden ....... but I hate brussel sprouts (from the store) because of the taste/texture.
I see a lot of peeps growing them though & I'm kinda wondering if I would like them if I grew them??
Are they a LOT tastier out of the garden (like tomatoes & carrots are)?

YES and just like carrots, even sweeter after a few good frosts.
Re: Brussel Sprouts grow well in SFG system???
My basic Brussels Sprouts recipe which leaves no sulfur taste or mushiness:
Brussels Sprouts trimmed of outer leaves, halved or quartered
rinse in cold water & drain
in a hot skillet cook some bacon, 2 or 3 slices or pancetta chopped
add a bit of olive oil then saute 1/4 cup diced or thinly sliced onion
on medium heat, pour Brussels sprouts into skilled and pan roast them, you can cover or not, until light brown and tender. (I am looking for light caramelizing).
add tsp lemon zest, maybe a little bit of lemon juice, salt and pepper to taste.
Before serving, add small amount of balsamic vinegar. you may add a bit of fresh grated parmesan to the top.
Il più squisito
you can also oven roast them.

Hi
Many to all, will be growing Brussel Sprouts in the SFG system next year. I never eat the sprouts until the frost as 'nipped' them, same with Parsnip its does alter the flavour to a more sweet taste :!:. I wiil still firm the soil to prevent loose, open sprouts.
Again many

I am having a few 'blown sprouts' at the very bottom of my stalks, but I am pleased with the rest of them. It is almost time to eat them! :
Re: Brussel Sprouts grow well in SFG system???
Welcome to the forum, Charles, and good luck with your Brussels Sprouts!

Hi
Yes, I believe you do get a few 'blown sprouts' at the bottom of the stem, but these are easily removed along with any yellowed leaves. But not general on every stem of brussel sprouts grow.

I totally hate anything that tastes like cabbage BUT have found that finely shreaded/sliced brussel sprouts, sauted with a little garlic, have a slightly nutty taste which is delicious. I may even grow a couple of plants next year!
Re: Brussel Sprouts grow well in SFG system???
I had good luck growing them, but could not keep the cabbage butterfly larve from eating them. I have since had luck using a netting over the top, to prevent butterflies from leaving eggs behind.

Acara, I don't know if it stays cool enough for you to grow 'em...unless you have a winter like last year!
I'm the only one in our house who likes them, so I have to content myself with eating them once or twice a year. (Steamed til crisp-tender, then halved and tossed in garlic and browned butter. Yum.)

When to plant?
I've never grown BS, even though I love them. You all have convinced me to try growing them next year. I'm in the Upper South. When should the plants go into the box?

Re: Brussel Sprouts grow well in SFG system???
I was wondering how to do sprouts in a SFG too since they also like a firm soil to prevent windrock. Support them well if your site is exposed to winter winds like mine I suppose is the answer. I am growing on a south facing slope so I was wondering if I would do better to set aside an area for my sprouties and do a three year rotation with maincrop potatoes and maybe leeks.
I don't like cabbage but I love fresh lightly boiled sprouts. I cut a cross in the bottom of the stalk and fetch them out as soon as they are tender. To me the worst thing is those mushy flavourless things they have the gross temerity to sell as frozen sprouts.

Brussel Sprouts
I must admit brussel sprouts are an aquired taste, but this does apply to other food and drink, for example parsnip, beer and wine.
Growing your own is possibly the best way to get the true taste. The down-side to this is the different varieties and you can eat sprouts from October to March, all have a different taste.
Personally I only grow brussel sprouts that will have Jack Frost nip the sprouts a number of times giving a sweeter taste, different types give varying degree of sweetess.
I certainley do-not like the taste of sprouts which appear in some shops in October, or any sprouts not nipped by frost.
