Anyone grow sprouts?
Was looking through the new Guerney Seed Catalog and they were peddling a little device for growing sprouts.
Went on youtube and found this:
Anyone try it yet?
BTW - The folks in the video have half the energy I have!

I generally do each winter. As the video says, it adds vitamins to the original bean. One can try all sort of seeds and beans. Try your local health store for a slection.
Re: Anyone grow sprouts?
I just soaked my first batch of wheat grass berries (technically I use Kamut) over the past two days and laid out them out on a flat today in some mels mix to grow into lush wheatgrass. Then I will juice the leaves. Sprouting improves the nutritional profile of any seed immensely. They are living raw foods, bursting with life and super healthy for you.

Re: Anyone grow sprouts?
Great video . Yep, I've done sprouts - and I was actually just thinking the other day that sprouting would be a great addition to the foundation (if I were to be so bold as to presume). Sprouting is growing your own food, after all. It's done indoors so weather/time-of-year mattereth not, it is nutritious, and it really is as easy as the video shows.
In the winter, add sprouted wheat berries to baked breads and your stews and chili. In the spring and fall, sprout alfalfa for a yummy addition to your SFG salad greens. Sprout mung beans to go in your stir-fry dishes along with the broccoli, peppers and pea pods from your SFG. You can even grow your sprouted wheat into wheat grass for your cat - it only takes a week. (Oops - Staf74 beat me to the post - yeah, you can juice it for yourself too).

Any health food store,
Re: Anyone grow sprouts?
I sprout extensively, especially through the winter months when the garden isn't growing. My guinea pig eats sprouts, so does my cat. We include sprouts in about three meals a week. I also sprout all the wheat I use before I grind it into flour. My emergency kit has a large supply of seeds for sprouting if food becomes scarce.
Edited to include where I get my seeds: http://sproutpeople.org/

From the sprouts I have had, I think I like radish the best. I like them with a good kick to them.

This looks like something fun to try. I've liked the sprouts I've tried, though that's not a whole lot. Some of the seeds seem a bit expensive, though! My eyes went right to the almond, peanut and sunflower sprouts - seem a bit high. Anybody here tried those?

Daikon radish and fenugreek are good and punchy! Cress is kind of peppery, and arugula tastes like full-grown arugula in a smaller "container". I like mustard sprouts on sandwiches where I'd use horseradish spread.

Re: Anyone grow sprouts?
So I went out and got some sprouting seeds yesterday!
Started soaking them last night and drained and rinsed this morning. I read someplace that the "tea" was packed with vitamins, so I sampled each one as I drained them. The alfalfa tea was really good. Actually none of them were bad, but the alfalfa definately had a nice character to it!
I used this link as reference to make my lids:

I have a feeling the wife is going to be none to happy the next time she cooks bacon

Re: Anyone grow sprouts?
In the 70's sprouts were a regular thing in my kitchen. I keep seeing this thread and remembering that I have not started any micro greens for Thanksgiving. I should get on that today! They should go well with left-overs.
Re: Anyone grow sprouts?
what's the difference between a "sprouting seed" and a "seed" "seed"? in other words, can you plant those sprouting seeds??

Re: Anyone grow sprouts?
From what I have read, seeds for sprouting are in "pure" form. Some seeds in packet form for planting have been treated.
The link mamachibi linked is a great learning tool for sprouts.

Ha! That's great - thanks for the laugh!
Re: Anyone grow sprouts?
All those little sprouts have enormous health benefits too. Back in the 70's they thought stomach ulcers were caused by stress, but have since learned that they are caused by a bacteria. And that bacteria is completely eradicated when you consume 3-day old broccoli sprouts.
Man, the money I could have saved on prescription Tagamet!

Oh, how I wish I had known that then! They put me on a diet with only white bread, white rice, pasta, stewed prunes and tomatoes, applesauce and baby food! I sure was motivated to get better, but didn't have a clue as to how! Yuck!

This sprouting concept sounds nutritionally wonderful too. I could be growing something indoors or out all year round. My entire christmas list is getting longer due to all the gardening topics learned on this forum. And I've got a birthday soon after christmas

Re: Anyone grow sprouts?
I made my mom a sprout jar and gave it to her yesterday. She was thrilled. Minus the butt chewing I will receive from my wife once she finds out what I did to her splatter guard and one of my canning jars, it cost me pennies for a tablespoon of seeds I put in for her to start.
But you are right llama. It would make a great gift! Buy a pack or two of seeds and include in the jar...I even saw sprout lids at the market that where well under $2.
You got my wheels a turning!
And my seeds are sprouting nicely this a.m.
