alternative/free materials

Hi! I'm new here. I have heard that someone out there used the pieces of a wire grid shelving unit as the walls for their garden. If that was you, can you post about how you did it? Has anyone heard of this? I have a shelving unit I was thinking of dismantling anyway, and this would help me get started with less cost.

Also, can anyone suggest any free materials I could use to build my garden?

to the SFG Forum. I have no advice about your shelving unit but as for alternative materials, I love wooden pallets!

Hi, welcome to the forum.

You are on the right track: always put your money into your Mel's Mix first. Everything else can be done free, cheap, or temporarily.

Possible box materials: rocks, blocks, bricks, sand bags, coffee cans, pop bottles, used lumber, used garage doors, pallets, and railroad ties.

Check to see if there are freecycles, craigslists, or Habitat for Humanity Resale Stores in your area for free, used, and re-purposed materials.

I've used grid shelves as trellises, but not as box sides. With a little thought, they should would fine as sides.
