Carrot Questions Empty Carrot Questions

Post  WendySue67 8/7/2011, 11:45 pm

I have searched this forum and not found any answers, so hopefully my questions are not repetitive...

My carrots are super shrimpy. They have been growing (and rather vigorously I might add) since early spring and I pulled the first few out and they are about 1 1/2 inches long with a big long orange string on the end of them. I dug my finger around the top and they looked that they were going to be a good size, so I was pretty surprised by how short they were. Have I done something wrong or did I pull them out too early? What can I do to get them to grow a little faster/better?

Also... I heard (and saw snippets of conversations on this forum) about wintering them over with mulch and being able to pull them out during the winter when you want them. Is there anything in particular I need to know about how to do that? And along with that, is it too late in the year to put more seeds in the ground? Where I am we will typically start getting our first frost nights about mid October...

Thanks in advance for any help! This is my first year with a garden and I have learned tons from this forum...don't know what I would do without it!

I forgot to mention that I am growing these in a double deep box (12 inches) and the variety I planted claim they will grow to 7 inches long. Every single thing I have planted this year has been growing VERY slow, so I'm actually not too surprised that the carrots are growing slow too.

Great question, I too had slow growing carrots this year. I think it's due to heat. we went from cool 70's to 90 temps like overnite. I'm interested to see what a "pro" says.

I too suspect the weather. Last year we had record heat and it took my carrots all season to grow.

My nantes for Carrot Week (planted 4-17-11) are not even as big around as my little finger yet. Cool weather is coming for the next 2 weeks, supposedly below average, so I am hopeful for my carrots. Planting a few more squares just in case.....

Here's a thread from a few weeks ago. https://squarefoot.forumotion.com/t8228-nantes-carrots-as-of-july-4-2011-carrot-week

My carrots were super small when I pulled them up then. I pulled them because the tops were starting to turn brown.
